I for one really, really want a dwarven romance, with either a male or female dwarf. Gaider's comment here gives me some small hope--it hasn't been totally discounted--however, his past objections and current caveat makes me worry.
He believes (or did once) that dwarven women look child-like, something I simply don't agree with. Every dwarven woman in DA:O looked like a voluptuous mature woman. To me, they were the most "adult" looking females in the game. That never seemed like an issue. Is it the height, then? Dwarven women come up to the chest of a human, that's not so small. That isn't unsexably short if I may be so bold. My Warden didn't let it stop her, I can tell you that. Dwarven men are as manly as can be too. What's the big deal about their appearance?
These seem like weak deflections to avoid having to deal with the dwarven romance issue. Not having a proper dwarven romance is a glaring omission to me, since human and elf romances are plentiful. It looks with this omission as though BioWare is playing favorites with the races, and that's not cool.
Having the "right" romance for a dwarf also makes me wonder. What does that mean? I am concerned that it could mean that the right romance is only dwarf-dwarf, to protect the devs from having to get grossed out at the thought of dwarves mixing with elves and humans or even kossith. I don't want the potential dwarf romance to be given short shrift, treated as an afterthought or a dirty secret, and only available to another dwarf (assuming we ever get to play dwarves again). A dwarf-dwarf romance would be great, but not if it is the only option and dwarves aren't allowed to romance other races.
Just give dwarves their due, romance-wise, that's all I want. It's only fair.
I think David is a "baws" and I respect him deeply; however I do have to agree that it does always seem like he comes up with clever ways of deflecting story/character/race ideas that he doesn't much like. After Origins, when complaints went up that there were no Female Elven companions to romance, David did much the same thing as with the Dwarven/Kossith requests; i.e. witty remarks and deflections.
However the point kept persisting until, eventually, if I'm not mistaken, he basically threw up his hands and went for complete honesty, basically saying there were no Female Elven Love Interests because he felt Female Elven romances had been done to death and were boring. Basically, as lead writer, he put his foot down over something that he didn't care for; not because it would have negatively impacted the story, not because it was pointless, and not because it would have sparked controversy, but simply because he didn't want it in the game.
Now, I could be wrong about that whole thing (if I am David or someone on the team will correct me with a text based **** Slap) and that's totally fine. My point of all this is that I'm somewhat concerned that, in regards to Dwarven/Kossith female/male companion characters that can be romanced (I'll admit, given the demand for both genders it certainly makes things tricky. I mean, do you have a female dwarf who's bisexual or a male dwarf who, likewise, swings both ways? Dito for a Kossith) there's a chance it will never happen because, regardless of the popularity or how awesome a story/character idea Sheryl or Luke or anyone else in the Writer's Pit comes up with David will shoot it down merely because he won't want it in the game because it's "icky" or "boring." Again, I hope I'm very much wrong in this.
