as long as there a possibility of ''FOOD FIGHT!!"", many would be tickled pink over it... not green with envy tho.lol

Frankly I'm not really interested in another Mass Effect game, and I'm definitely not interested in a Mass Effect game canonizing Synthesis.

If diversity is the natural
result of evolution how come there are numerous species of primates but
only one species of us? Cro Magnon died or was assimilated, hardly
diverse.

Speciation is a very, very slow process. Take a large group of humans and put them in a separate environment for several hundred thousands of years and you might actually get a new species.

Rubios wrote...

In fact the key mechanism of evolution is natural selection, which basically removes diversity.

But meh...

You are right, natural selection is the driving force of evolution, however you still need a genetic pool from which to select. The more diverse this pool is, the better are the chances for survival of a species.

I'd actually buy a WiiU for that game.

If only they made 3 different standalone games with medium-term future of each ending... so much potential.

I'd beg to differ our climate has changed innumerable times over the last three hundred million years or so yet sharks refuse to produce new species to accommodate these changes. Humans were a diverse species yet now we are one. You are right that speciation takes time, there is evidence of it occurring now, oddly in dietary habits, but it isn't as simple as saying synthesis forces an evolutionary change and that is the be all and end all. The characters you see react in ways that you'd expect of them, therefore they can still remain ideologically different. Resources that weren't once important could gain value.

The greatest omission from ME3 was resource scanning when a galaxy is at war. The black market, plus renegade or paragon, was practically begging for it. There is potential for a fourth game set in the time frame of post ME3.

Synthesis goes against one of the principles of natural evolution: diversity.

Synthesis does not eliminate diversity. The idea that it does is 100% headcanon, just like the idea that it huskifies or brainwashes or stagnates evolution.

Stop headcanoning the game. It's silly and pointless, not to speak of wrong.

Fair enough. To me it wasn't explained well enough, so I start interpreting. Maybe I am interpreting it all wrong.

However, if several distinct species are suddenly connected through the same magic space-DNA, I assume they've become less diverse.

What's your interpretation of synthesis?

I can't speak on behalf of Arcian, but my take on synthesis is it was expected by the Starchild at some point, hence having it ready. The Protheans emerged as the dominant species in their cycle, presumably all prior cycles followed a similar flaw. They all failed as they followed that ****-like belief that tthey had emerged as the dominant species and lesser species had nothing to offer and therefore were not worthy of consideration as equals.

They stagnated and that led to their inability to deal with the Reapers. In our cycle, the decisions we make are of little consequence beyond those we choose to take with us. In a timescale of universe proportions the Geth/Quarians don't really matter. Kill one or the other, save them both is not noteworthy, beyond you placed everyone you brought to the battle was fighting for their survival.

As long as they continue the story and make synthesis well... less creepy, then I'm game.

Jessica Merizan recently revealed that Bioware considers synthesis an inevitibility for the Mass Effect universe, and that if they set a game forward in the timeline synthesis will occur regardless of whether or not Shepard was the agent that instigated it. The galaxy at some point will choose synthesis on its own.

The question is: Would you be interested in playing Mass Effect IV, if synthesis has occured?

Poll

Also if synthesis being canon doesn't interest you, what is it you don't like about that being the backdrop for ME4?

I don't consider synthesis an inevitability and i certainly would take the logic of an idealogical extremist like the catalyst with a pinch of salt. I chose destroy and the galaxy will be free to develop in whatever manner it so wishes. So i find it very unlikely the galaxy would develop into the synthesis the catalyst tries to impose.

In ME2 it is implied your resurrection procedure included, and when I say implied I mean categorically stated, you are altered. I see ME4 coming on as the quest for immortality or incompatibility becomes the quest.

I'm on board with Conniving_Eagle's idea of making Refuse the canon ending, but letting Shepard survive, and having the Quarians blow up the Reapers, thus saving the cycle from annihilation.

Thus ME4 starts with Shepard, Anderson (must have Keith David), a couple of familiar squadmates (probably Liara and James) and a whole bunch of new faces, and the Quarians emerge in a dominant role on the Council. Tali I think would go on to become one of the new leaders among the Quarians, maybe even Councilor Tali Zorah.

The final 20 minutes of ME3 is never spoken of again. It's the only retcon that makes any sense.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! DO WANT! But we should also have the option of using a different character/race. After 3 games, Shepard has gotten a little old.

my Shepard had sex Liara in ME and then with every female squadmate in ME2, and then Liara again in ME3...so the only reason i would like synthesis is knowing everyone in the galaxy that has my Shep's DNA probably has aids.

real fact.

NO WAY. It'd not make any sense. Synthesis is ultimate peace&love ending. Making a violent game out of that would ruin the point of the ending.
Unless you want The Sims Effect there's no point.

Let me just start by saying the level of sheer ignorance alot of people are displaying in this thread on the subject of evolutionary biology is simply STAGGERING.

Seriously, bloody hell are some of you talking complete bollocks.

But I'm not going to even try to correct you.

On topic; synthesis is the single most retardedly stupid idea I've ever seen in gaming.

If the rest of the ME writing team are as 'I honestly don't understand how he can function as a human being' stupid as Walters is for writing it, as to actually agree that it's in anyway, anything other than embarrassingly ignorant anti-science claptrap, then there is no hope for this company, let alone the Mass Effect franchise.

I mean I'm not against the idea of transhumanism, quite the contrary infact, I'm certain that's where our species is headed, but synthesis both implements it in the worst, most lazily written, unimaginative and pretentious manner possible, and portrays it as total bunnies and unicorns and rainbows and wishes, saccharine sweet way, without any real thought at all into the actual realistic and completely catastrophic effects such a sudden implementation of a change on that magnitude would actually incur, that I could not take it even slightly seriously.

It is simply complete and utter ******.

And what's more, it would completely destroy the ME universe as we know it.

Why even bother using the ME universe, if it'd be related in name only? If they want to do a game about a post Transhumanism homogenised society of immortal cyborgs, make a new property. Don't permanently change Mass Effect into something completely unrecognisable beyond a few aesthetic details to do it.

No. The concept would not interest me.

Synthesis, as it arose in ME3, does not make sense to me. I'm not keen on exploring the concept either. The Borg are a fascinating race, but their adventures are already being chronicled elsewhere.

How could Synthesis be canon for ME4, anyway? Doesn't Synthesis mean that we've reached a state of utopia where war can't be a possibility?

Why would there be a war anyway, when everyone's the same and there are no opinions or disagreements of any kind because there's no diversity at all.

Clearly ME4 would be taking place far into the future when a new species of organics have evolved unnoticed by the rest of the galaxy. When these organics encounter the rest of the galaxy and reject assimi....the gift of synthesis, tensions become high. You control a cyborg extermi.....peace keeping soldier sent to brainwa....win over the primitive organics. Alas the natives are too unreasonable and you are forced into a galactic war to purif....save the galaxy from their evil!

Op,I think you missed Jessica's point. She doesn't mean synthesis is canon. She means the concept of synthesis is a drawing point to any form of advancement with ME.
It is inevitable. The problem with the option that way given to us is that it's forced.
In short, I would not play a ME game if synthesis is cannon. But would play a ME game if synthesis is one of the Major themes.

ME is not the first scifi story with this concept.
