After DA2/ME3 and in the hope that it's still early enough that fan feedback can influence DA3, I just want to say one thing about you guys at Bioware and your video games.

Companion characters are the strongest thing you have going for you and have been since the beginning. When I think of Bioware games and why I used to love them so much, only one thing comes to mind.

The characters you guys create.

Meeting them, going through an adventure with them, seeing them at their best and at their worst, forming relationships with them, and even saying goodbye to them. It all has an impact and you guys are the only company that consistantly does this at a high quality.

You guys need to embrace this more in DA3. You need to give us more interactions, more customization options, more character related quests, deeper more meaningful relationships, and for gods sake make the love interest part of the game more impactful.

Mass Effect 2 for instance, a game that 100% revolved around gathering companions, helping to solve some of their issues, and then uniting them all at the end to fight the big bad, and it is the most universally praised game the trilogy and perhaps even your companys greatist game to date (Though Baldur's Gate 2 may take that).

The writing is right there on the wall. The companion characters make your games.

If you want to convince me to pick up DA3, a focus on strong companion characters is your best bet.

Cause I can assure you that it's not going to be the combat that makes me part with $60, it's not going to be the UI or an easy to navigate, dumbed down inventory system, and after DA2/ME3 it's definitetly not going to be because of the games main story plot...

creating characters/character relationships are what they are best at. Somewhere down the line they were convinced them otherwise

That's my favorite element of their games as well: a shared ordeal with a group of characters you get to know better.

You mean DAO was not an RPG? It was only three years ago.

It feels like a lot longer than that, for some reason. A lot, lot longer.

Yes, the companions are a must. As annoying as Alistair was in DAO, he was great. He was easily my favorite male companion, unless we consider Sandal one (well, I consider him one). Morrigan and Leliana were great as well, tied for first for the females. Those three and my Warden were my essential core party in all of my playthroughs. Varric for DA2 was by far the best one in that game. (Anders felt weak since DAOA) Merrill was ho hum (I found, but my Hawke also romanced her first), and Isabela was a disappointment. The others were forgettable from DA2, and DAO's that I did not mention were much more memorable than DA2's. The characters needed much more development.

Also, I liked how Alistair's and Morrigan's plots fit in with the main plot. DA2's was a bit too much for the companions. I would love for the companions plots to enrich the main arc, but not at the expense of helping boring, unlikable characters. The dialogue should fit the characters and interactions, and I know you guys know this. I know you guys can pull it off, but will you?

I liked the banter between characters in DA:O, they didn't always snipe at each other like in DA2. Honestly, I would have loved to have had an option to tell Carver to "shut up until you grow up", and Fenris and Anders to just stop insulting each other about Mages.
Please, Bioware, can't we have some companions who really like each other in DA:3? And can't we have some more realistic romances, not nudity, but at least not fully clothed, wearing their boots and knives... (Anders comes to mind), that was the weirdest love scene I ever saw in a game.

this is a joke right?

did you even play DAO unlike DA2 the  dao party always fought and their was never a moment that cemnted a freind ship exiting in  the party that didnt involve the pc.

In DA2 their are strong freindships between Isabela/Avaline, Isabela/Merril/Varric, Fenris/Isabela, Merril and Bethany or Carver
Vitriolic [/i] freindships with Fenris/Sebastian, Isabela and Sebastian Verric/Avaline, hell  Even Carver and Verric

DAO never has a moemnt any where neard as good as  Avaline protestign the idea of selling Isabela out, or Isabela threating amale hawke with castration if he breaks merri's heart

their is non of that in DAO just fighting in teasing and hate between that party.

DA2 was a disgusting pathetic piece of dog turd compare to Origins, and Mass Effect 3 was a huge letdown, Bioware are FINISHED. This DA3 game will be the final nail in the coffin of Bioware and serves them right. They pander to the casuals and forget what their true loyal fans want. Multiplayer? NO THANKS, anime art style? NO THANKS button mashing combat? NO THANKS pathetic stryline? NO THANKS, one city and reuse of enviroments over and over? NO THANKS forced protaganist so we cannot influence their character? NO THANKS fake 'choices'that don't mean anything when the sequel gets retconned? NO THANKS. ORIGINS was a great game, I would rather play with my stool than DA2.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, Fraq Hound. There are a lot of things I enjoy about BioWare's games. But companions are one of the most important to me, if not the most important. They make the adventures and the stories much more engaging and fun. I was rather happy with how DA:O dealt with this aspect. Though there could be something more to do or talk about with your LI after bedding them.
While I appreciate what they tried to do in DAII, I don't think that getting companion interactions in the form of go-to-talk-to-the-companion-now quests helped anything. I still like some of the DAII companions very much, love some of the dialogues and find the personal quests fun. I like the idea of the companions having a home base and love when they randomly appear in your home which is particularly lovely for LIs. But I would like more interactions and more freedom. Being able to talk to them outside, for example, would be very nice.
I definitely hope that companions won't become any less important in DAIII. They're one of the reasons BioWare's games are so enjoyable.

@MerchantGOL
They weren't always fighting in DA:O. Morrigan was very argumentative, but other than that it seemed to me that the DA:O crew was rather symbiotic. At least I got a great deal of banters that were nice, funny or at least neutral. Alistair, Zevran, Leliana and Wynne have a lof of hilarious and inoffensive banters with most of the other companions. Of course, not all of the relationships are that great. Wynne seems to dislike Zevran quite a bit and doesn't even try to hide it, for example.

DAII companions seem to be much more hostile towards each other in their banters from what I've seen so far. I swear I sometimes feel like grabbing Fenris and Anders by the ear like little boys. The banters between Isabela and Aveline made my jaw drop a few times. I know that doesn't mean they want each other dead but still...

I guess it depends on which companions you choose to take with you. In DA:O I hardly ever took Morrigan because I didn't like her sarcasm with almost everyone. I ususlly took Alistair, Liliana, Zeveran, Sten (sometimes), and Wynne.

In DA2 I almost always took Varric, Anders, Fenris, and Isabela, I never took Carver and Anders in the same party, and hardly ever took Aveline and Isabela together. I just got tired of all the sniping.

go back and play DAO cause u obviously  didnt pay atention

Sten, Shale and Morrigan are hostile to every on in the party, ALister and Lelianna threaten to kill morrigan a few times

Zevran and Ogrhen  bring out simmiar reactions of disgust in the rest of the party, their  are no freindship moments.

Leilianna tries to become morrgians freind  morrigan becomes twwice as much a ****, Wynn tries to offer advices to alister, he gets mad at her for being nosy

i actualy gave  examples of the close bonds the DA2 party have. yes Anders and fenris don't like eachother, but to ignroe the fact that Fenris gets allogn really well with Verric, Sebastian and Especaily isabela who he can form a  romance with with out any inflluence from the PC  shows u have no idea what your talking about.

Hah, thank you for the lecture. I obviously don't have an idea what I'm talking about. I've made all those DA:O banters up in that crazy head of mine. Thank you for letting me know.

Yes, some companions have issues with each other. Wynne tries to lecture Zevran and gets extremely angry if he makes fun of it. Sten is easily irritated. Morrigan spits poison all the time. Still, there's plenty of humorous or nice dialogues. Do I really have to give examples?

There's no hostility between Alistair and Wynne. She teases him and he gets embarrassed and sometimes freaks out. But that's it. Alistair and Zevran seem to be mostly all right while chatting with others or each other in general. While Oghren has his moments with every party member - to tell the truth, he can be pretty disgusting sometimes - he still has banters that let you know they still somewhat get along. Leliana seems to be nice to everyone, aside from Morrigan who doesn't get along with anyone. Sten seems to be a little distant but, heck, he's a Qunari.

I admit I don't know anything about Shale and Sebastian as I don't have them in my games.

Yes, the companions all have their bad moments with one another in DA:O. As do the companions in DAII. But don't tell me they keep arguing the whole game because otherwise I would have to throw your advice to "go back and play DAO cause u obviously didnt pay atention" back at you. You're accusing me of ignoring the good bonds in DAII - which I don't as I was speaking solely about the banters - yet you do the same with DA:O.

I've never said the relationships in DAII are bad. I just said the companions seemed to be quite hostile in their banters. Maybe I've just not been lucky. Maybe I just don't understand the humor IF there's any. But another poster here proves my point about some characters' bickering. A lot of what I've seen so far was the characters arguing and in a few cases even insulting each other. And no, it's not just Fenris and Anders. However, I'm not saying it's all the time or that all the companions do it, just that there seem to be a lot of it.

Actually if you listen to all the banter in each act of DA2 you will find the companions forming friendships and at times grudging respect for each other. Aveline and Isabela form a very tight friendship with each other. The same with Isabela and Merrill. Crver is meant to be an ass. He changes if he becomes a warden. He begins to understand the mage perspective as he sees the abuses of the mages by the templars. He even warns his Hawke about the Tranquil solution. Fenris is down on Anders because he sees him as a weak individual especially compared to a mage like Bethany. Fenris considers her to be strong. and grows to respect her as her respects a mage Hawke.
Varric and Aveline are hard on Carver because they see him as an arrogant ass until he starts to grow as a warden or templar.

Morrigan in DAO spits venom at every other companion. She does it with contempt. Shale has no problem throwing the venom right back at her. Shale and Sten form a friendship because they both have contempt for the squishies at the start, but change their opinion over time. All the companions in DAO and DA2 have their high and low points.

The amount of bickering in DAO and DA2 is roughly the same.

allistar responds badly to wynns mothering, and  is verry hostile to zevran for being an assasin,  Liellanna tries to be nice but gets blown off by every party member , or gets hit on [zevran & ogrhen]

their are little to no freindships in the DAO party

the game never once takes the time to make you think their is any comadrie theirm noo actual freindships.

where as DA2 not only makes you know they are freinds, but makes it clear that they hang out together independant of the protagonist.

I would dearly love to see your LI companion, to have a more impact on the story. That Act 3 quest where they can be stolen, for lack of a better word, was an excellent idea, but I never got to experience that because of what happens with Bethany and Carver taking priority.

Make it so we WILL have our LI taken away in some sort of damsel (/mansel?) in distress situation, if we choose to romance anyone. And if we do romance someone, make it so we know beforehand, that they've been taken, and make the quest based around that.

Also, since we won't be playing as Hawke again, and since we can romance Tallis, please let us see some results from it. I know we couldn't see the Warden, but I still felt like romancing Leli, Ali and Zev had little to no (actually no, because of the import bugs) effect on their appearance in DA2, in relation to them actually having a thriving relationship with the Warden.

That I'm at least willing to accept. I'm not willing to accept what MerchantGOL keeps repeating though - that there's only hate and no friendship or respect among the DA:O companions. That's just not true.

I agree that the companions in both games have their good and bad moments. I also can't argue about Morrigan being mean and disrespectful, often with no reason. Maybe I've got the feeling that DAII companions argue more in their banters because there seem to be quite a lot of bickering in the first two parts of the game. In DA:O it doesn't appear to me so - maybe because the banter doesn't depend on the time spent together which means you get all kinds of banter, good or bad, throughout the whole game.

We must have played a completely different game.

I agree with you that DAII, unlike DA:O, takes the time to let you know that the companions spend their time together even without the protagonist around, which is definitely nice. Unfortunately, I really can't agree with what you say about DA:O.

I always love the banter between Anders and Oghren in DA:OA. This is what make the games memorable for me. The Characters Bioware! The Charachters!
When I think about Dragon Age: Origins, I think about Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana and the rich branching stories they bring with them.
When I think about Dragon Age 2...I think about how good Legacy was. And Varric of course.

Doesn't that ring a bell? Oh yeah, something went wrong with the Characters in DA2.

The most important factor for DA3 are the characters. Return an old favorite (Leliana?), add new and rich companions, and maybe make Cullen a companion.
