Because I like my protagonists to be the same gender as me.

Edit:

You know what, the hell with it. If you like FemShep, that's your preference. I will not longer argue with people on this, as it's a matter of opinion.

Because they want to, why else?

(Also, I'd rather rewatch the Synthesis ending than have to listen to Meer's voice.)

I always play Male when given the choice. I never even consider playing a game as female. I never understood the appeal. I associate nothing with female main characters. If I'm going to spend countless hours in an RPG (Skyrim, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, even Borderlands) why would I spend it role-playing as a chick. I play Gears of War online and I can't even play as Sam or Anya because it just doesn't feel right. The only female character that I liked playing as was Madison Paige in Heavy Rain, but I think that had more to do with the immersion of that games mechanics.

This is where I'm supposed to say I understand why other guys play fem-shep, but I just don't. I however won't yell and scream at you if you do. After all, it's your Shepard.

I don't really understand the voice acting swaying the decision to play Male or Female. Shepards voice is very straight forward and direct, which is why I like him. Fem-shep has so many emotions when she talks that I turn on boyfriend mode and just completely zone her out until I've missed more than half the conversation.

I use to play a MMORPG type game(3rd person of course). Most people had male characters because the gender majority for players was guys. After a while...all those guys started getting "Gender Change" kits for their character to turn female...and most of the reasons were "Because I get tired of staring at male a** all day, I want something better to look at." or just to trick other players to thinking the player is a girl.
Seems legit B)

Because diversity. If I play game twice I may as well change the gender to see different romances (Garrus in my case) and voice acting.
That, and I've never had problem with playing females in VG.

1. I prefer Jennifer Hale's voice acting. I don't hate Meer, and I admit he got better as the series went on, but I still prefer Hale personally.
2. Femshep is a strong female character, but not in a "girl power!" or "you go girl!" way. She just happens to be a space marine that is good at her job that happens to be female, and nobody makes a big deal out of it.
3. Femshep and Liara are my favorite possible couple. Samantha is up there, too.

Hurr because if I'm going to spend 15 hours playing a game I'd rather be looking at a woman's butt than some dude!11 I'm so manly!!! ******!

On a serious note, I tried playing as Femshep once, and I absolutely hated it. Waaaay too much emotion and over the top moments. She doesn't sound like a soldier. But hey, at least the option is there.

This is ultimately why I love FemShep. I don't even like calling her FemShep for any other reason than identification, because she's seriously just Shepard with a different model. Shepard is Shepard is Shepard is Shepard, etc.

Meh, I guess the boring answer is yeah, I chose FemShep 'cause I'm a girl, but in the end... I don't know if I'd feel differently about a BroShep. Our Sheps are our Sheps, and the "essence" of Shepard is the same, bro and fem alike. The only thing that would change interpretation is voice acting and admittedly I do love Jennifer Hale (exception: "I'm more interested in talking for a bit." It's the only JH line I loathe, but then again, she's talking to a character whose famous tagline is "but the priiiiiiiiiiize"). I don't feel she's OTT otherwise and I do think she sounds like a soldier, especially in combat.

I'm thinking about starting a new play through as femshep. I played the first game and a part of the second as a girl before I realized how good Jennifer Hales voice acting is. Been a BroShep ever since

And this. The industry is saturated with male protagonists. That's why I always enjoy playing as a strong female protagonist, when I get the chance. Doesn't matter that I'm a male. this is a role playing game.

Because I support and enjoy strong female characters. I remember when Alien came out with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley - ooh the horror of a strong woman protagonist! Still my fav movies.
Also, being female I know how strong women can be and why on earth would I want to RP a guy, given the choice.
I love Jennifer Hales voice, and dislike Sheploo's.
I tried making a male Shep and couldn't get a face I could stand to look at.
And Kaidan. Nuff said. :D

Why play as Femshep?

Character. I'm not and never will be my Shepard. I'm no more a Spectre than I am spacer kid who survived Akuze or a gangland orphan turned hero of Elysium. Gender is just another variable for determining the make up of a character, but one that has quite a big impact.

Now last time I checked, about 50% of the human race happened to be women... my Shepard just happens to be one of 'em.

I honestly liked Jennifer Hale's voice acting better. I'm not trying to bash Meer or anything though.

Also, thinking about the story as a whole, and especially thinking about seeing Shepard all broken and battered on the Citadel, there was something really tragic, unusual, and rather poetic about a woman being the one who saved the galaxy, who never stopped fighting, and who gave hope to everyone.

Granted, I'm a girl, so I obviously could relate better to a female character. But my boyfriend, who's played as both, definitely enjoyed playing as femShep more, for the same reasons as me.

Although... I don't know. Maybe he really just liked watching a girl get it on with Liara :)
