Is there a reason why people should not play games with a female protagonist?

They never played any Tomb Raider games.

I still wouldn't, they take Lara from one extreme to the other, shes a plaything.

How would you know if you *NEVER* (key word) played one?

I am a very casual gamer, and ever since I started playing I've played games that have had a strong female character. I started with Tomb Raider (at 11/12 I think the main reason why is obvious), and really ended up liking a strong woman be the one who kicks ass. Then came Resident Evil and its choice to play as a strong female character alongside a male character, and the first two Dino Crisis games that featured Regina as a strong female character that was fun to play as.

Of course then there's also all the fighting games including the MK and SF series that have strong (albeit highly sexualized) women characters, very literally.

tl;dr: As a dude I've grown accustomed to seeing women do just as good of a job of kicking ass/fighting evil as men, and have come to prefer it in many cases. Therefore, while I play as both broshep and femshep, I typically play as femshep first. Also, Hale is leagues above Meer.

Because i also read media about it, and a simple google search brings up all i need to know.

Lets see, how many straight male boxes does Lara Croft check
> Big boobs, check
> Sexy, check
> Slightly tanned, check
> Big bum, check
> Guns, check

Lets see what the "new" Lara plays to
> Protective male
> Help her
> Still sexy
> Still has guns

(NOTE: I do realise that i AM missing out on the actual character, but the thing thats always turned me off is the obvious visual style).

Now, if she'd stayed true to her original design, a female Duke Nukem, i wouldn't have an issue, but the fact is that shes gone to the other extreme in an attempt to be edgy and I [i]hate]/i] it. Shepard and The Boss are strong characters not because of what they are, but what they have achieved. Yes i know i sound like a feminist, i HATE feminists, but this is an issue that genuinely irks me.

I'm tired of the sausage fest.

lol I love how being slightly tanned is apparently a universal indicator of what turns men on.

BTW, I don't think you'll find any male player who doesn't find Lara sexy on some level, but believe it or not, not all of us think so solely because of the T&A.

I'm not judging actual perception from a far more diverse audience (with a small amount of smart guys out there), but the intent is so obviously clear it makes me mad, so mad i'm just gonna stop before i pull my already short hair out.

And generally, from what i've observed, tanned is definately a particular thing to look for.

Put it this way, i'm sick of devs thinking i'm too shallow to appreciate a good character, and would rather look at boobs. There are right times and places for that. ME3 isn't one of them....until the romance scenes....and even then i don't get boobs, because plates...which even then are covered with his civvies....

ME3 is prime example of how the media can be WRONG lol

Edit: and a Lara change was done to make her more "Angelina Jolie" to fit the movies. I'll give you that.

I am male but I play a female Sheppard most of the time. Mostly because I am getting tired of the “strong man saves the world and gets the damsel in distress” cliché. I like that for once I can see a strong female save the world(galaxy) and get the girl/guy.

And the butt thing, but mostly the anti stereotype.Image IPB

Edit: Oh, and Male Sheppards voice and facialexpressions just rubs me the wrong way. Kinda creeps me out.

Agree. Also tired of it always has to be the white, straight male. So I made my broShep look more like The Rock (only because I failed at making him look like Samuel L. Jackson)

My male shep looks asian, so guess we have something more incommon in that regard.

All these good reasons. I was also just fed up with the cardboard cutout protagonists the games industry has been pushing out by the truckload since 2006.

When I played ME1, I created a female character to give the game a bit more distinction from anything else in its genre.

And I quickly came to appreciate Jennifer Hale's work.

I have a few MaleSheps too, but FemShep was the first one I ever took through the game. So I guess she's my canon Shep.

Imagine my horror when I accidentally chose synthesis ...

I like playing Femshep because in my opinion the voice acting is better. I like a voice actor that can emote and I like strong female leads that can be a soldier, a lover, a diplomat, a leader, and a friend and still be the hero. Femshep to me will forever be canon which is why I don't want a ME movie because most likely it will have a manshep. I find her a more believable character all around.

I find male characters - especially stereotypical tough-guy, soldier-type heroes - excruciatingly boring.

Picturing Shepard as a female at least makes her a little unusual; a rare exception in a male-dominated genre.

When I first started ME, I played male, but I didnt get past Eden prime with him, I couldn't get immersed with the voice. And since then, I've only played Femshep.

Yeah, I started as a male Shep on ME1 and barely made it past Eden Prime myself, I reloaded as Femshep and have never looked back.

One day I might make a male Shep for a full renegade run, but really, who has the time? :P

Because I prefer to play as my gender.

Because finding strong female leading characters on ANY media is a welcome thing.

Jennifer Hale does a great job

And of course...

Just look at her! :D

Because of the new dialogue and romantic interaction.
Also because I admire her curves while playing, something I can't do with Mshep...

Also, Jennifer Hale hooray.

Honestly, though? Why does it matter? I'll never quite understand why playing a female character is apparently such an oddity as to require justification.
