On a serious note, I tried playing as Femshep once, and I absolutely hated it. Waaaay too much emotion and over the top moments. She doesn't sound like a soldier. But hey, at least the option is there.
*Watches the documentary 'Restrepo' again* Er...yes she does.
I think folks mostly play an opposite gender when the option is there simply to add more variety to additional play throughs. I love that BioWare gives players that option in pretty much all of their games. I've only played Maleshep once and didn't much like it. Not because I hated Meer's acting though...I think it was more burnout on being a female who's only option in a lot of these types of games is to play a male character.
If I ever do a complete playthrough of ME3 again, I might just run it as Maleshep though, since I think ME3 was Meer's best work in the series.

Yeah. I'm a man and Sheploo most certainly isn't me. I don't see any reason what gender has to do with anything. It's Shepard's story, not mine and to me Shepard is a woman (something that I'm not). I enjoy the story and the game way more this way.bleetman wrote...

I find male characters - especially stereotypical tough-guy, soldier-type heroes - excruciatingly boring.
Honestly, though? Why does it matter? I'll never quite understand why playing a female character is apparently such an oddity as to require justification.

First time, because I'm a female. Second time because I prefer Jennifer Hale over Mark Meer. All the other times, because I couldn't get used to BroShep. Still have to finish a run with one.
I couldn't finish because of the ending of ME3 but what I saw of Meer's work in ME3 was a HUGE improvement from earlier work in this series tbh.
A couple of scenes he actually delivered a line or two better than Hale.

2) I love Jennifer Hale's voice
3) I like strong woman character and it's nice to have the choice playing with a man or a woman
4) I tried playing with a BroShep , but I gave up rapidly and gone back to FemShep.

There´s a search funtion you know.
OT: I want to experience the game fully, so I play both.
My question would rather be like: why do people who play Femshep put mods on her so that she´s running around in lingerie?
Missing anything ?

Oh also I played male shep in ME2 only just so I can romance Miranda and Jack but now in ME3 it's pointless since they are not in my crew.

I strongly suspect that the people who ask this question are mostly teenaged boys who feel VERY insecure in their masculinity, and cannot wrap their head around the idea that playing a character of the opposite sex in a video game says absolutely NOTHING about either your gender identity or your sexual orientation.
In short, what they're basically asking is: "Doesn't playing a woman mean that you're GAY/ a TRANNY? Ewwww! I'd never ever do that!"

But seeing that I also have played a number of MaleSheps I think I can savely say it´s because I like a) to role-play the characters in a RPG...*duh*...and
Though a better question for me after reading through these posts is "Why do I find guys that also enjoy playing a FemShep more likeable than those who don´t?"...don´t worry, I know the answer, but I don´t care for flame wars.

I also like FemShep's voice actress. One of my FemSheps is a Sentinal (for a gold power armor look) named Dynaheir. Slight homage to the characters she voiced for Baldur's Gate and Metroid Prime series.
