The romances actually didn't have anything todo with it for me since i did not even know they were there when i played ME for the first time.

On a serious note, I tried playing as Femshep once, and I absolutely hated it. Waaaay too much emotion and over the top moments. She doesn't sound like a soldier. But hey, at least the option is there.

*Watches the documentary 'Restrepo' again* Er...yes she does.

I think folks mostly play an opposite gender when the option is there simply to add more variety to additional play throughs. I love that BioWare gives players that option in pretty much all of their games. I've only played Maleshep once and didn't much like it. Not because I hated Meer's acting though...I think it was more burnout on being a female who's only option in a lot of these types of games is to play a male character.

If I ever do a complete playthrough of ME3 again, I might just run it as Maleshep though, since I think ME3 was Meer's best work in the series.

Mostly because

I find male characters - especially stereotypical tough-guy, soldier-type heroes - excruciatingly boring.

Also, Jennifer Hale hooray.

Honestly, though? Why does it matter? I'll never quite understand why playing a female character is apparently such an oddity as to require justification.

Yeah. I'm a man and Sheploo most certainly isn't me. I don't see any reason what gender has to do with anything. It's Shepard's story, not mine and to me Shepard is a woman (something that I'm not). I enjoy the story and the game way more this way.

Another game I am currently playing is kind of old but I just picked it up called WET. They don't give the choice. Rubi is a badass and being voiced by Eliza Duscku (sp?) doesn't hurt. But it reminds me of Kill Bill style. I guess I wasn't supposed to buy that game either being a guy?

First time, because I'm a female. Second time because I prefer Jennifer Hale over Mark Meer. All the other times, because I couldn't get used to BroShep. Still have to finish a run with one.

I couldn't finish because of the ending of ME3 but what I saw of Meer's work in ME3 was a HUGE improvement from earlier work in this series tbh.

A couple of scenes he actually delivered a line or two better than Hale.

1) I'm a woman
2) I love Jennifer Hale's voice
3) I like strong woman character and it's nice to have the choice playing with a man or a woman
4) I tried playing with a BroShep , but I gave up rapidly and gone back to FemShep.

I think that it´s like the two hundred an fifty nninth time this question has been asked.

There´s a search funtion you know.

OT: I want to experience the game fully, so I play both.

My question would rather be like: why do people who play Femshep put mods on her so that she´s running around in lingerie?

Missing anything ?

I am a girl and I never play female char just cos of it I find the voice acting nicer and I much rather hear and see female than some guy.
Oh also I played male shep in ME2 only just so I can romance Miranda and Jack but now in ME3 it's pointless since they are not in my crew.

I play only female characters and Mass Effect in not an exception. I'm female and feel more attached to female protagonists :) I love my FemShep :)

I wanted to try the game with different options, and femshep feels like a completely different character (especially when she gets hit on by some sleaze).

Originally, because when I first started ME1, all the male Shepard appearance options struck me as either too stereotypically "macho space marine" or just kind of odd. And overall I prefer Hale to Meer, though each of them has moments that are better than the other. I do have several characters of each gender, though.

I strongly suspect that the people who ask this question are mostly teenaged boys who feel VERY insecure in their masculinity, and cannot wrap their head around the idea that playing a character of the opposite sex in a video game says absolutely NOTHING about either your gender identity or your sexual orientation.

In short, what they're basically asking is: "Doesn't playing a woman mean that you're GAY/ a TRANNY? Ewwww! I'd never ever do that!"

I´m female so I guess I don´t need to explain why I prefer FemShep.
But seeing that I also have played a number of MaleSheps I think I can savely say it´s because I like a) to role-play the characters in a RPG...*duh*...and B) I like to experience all the different scenarios and perspectives the game has to offer.

Though a better question for me after reading through these posts is "Why do I find guys that also enjoy playing a FemShep more likeable than those who don´t?"...don´t worry, I know the answer, but I don´t care for flame wars. ;)

I'm a man with a maleShep, but also a femShep

And tbh it's as sinister and perverse as it seems

I do it for variation in playthroughs. I started a lot of Shepards in ME1, but have 4 that I took completely through ME1 & ME2 up until the beginning of ME3.  2 Sheps / 2FemSheps

I also like FemShep's voice actress. One of my FemSheps is a Sentinal (for a gold power armor look) named Dynaheir. Slight homage to the characters she voiced for Baldur's Gate and Metroid Prime series.
