Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within - Yeah it's FMV. But in it's defense, it's well acted and properly sets up the gothic horror atmosphere that Sierra was aiming for.

Icewind Dale - Baldur's Gate and it's sequel will always be the superior RPG's in comparison to it's fellow Infinity Engine peer. But I always felt Icewind Dale had the superior presentation and this intro is a prime example. I was amazed when I first saw it.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn - In fairness though, BG2 really stepped up with this magnificent intro that neatly sums up the first game's storyline and gives you a taste of the things to come.

Fallout - This opening always brought chills to me. So much so that I was afraid to see what lay in store for me when the vault door opened.

Soul Edge - A change in name to Soul Calibur, five sequels later along with improved graphics, and Namco still hasn't topped this amazing intro to their sword fighting series.

Starcraft Brood War - The first game's intro wasn't much to write home about, but this is a great improvement and really sells the idea of a planetary war.

Mass Effect 2 - I was already impressed by the cinematic tone Bioware nailed here, but to have the balls to kill off the main character in the opening minutes? I was quite stunned.

Batman Arkham Asylum - It's always been the general rule that Batman games tend to suck. But when Rocksteady's new title began with this tense escort of the Joker into the asylum, somehow we knew this would be good. Lucky for us, it was better than we ever imagined.

Red Dead Redemption - This lurching train ride sets up the somber and melancholic tone that will haunt protagonist John Marston's journey back to the Old West.
