EA wants maximum games in minimum time. That's it.
They own Bioare now.
Quality is just a first victim.

No, you know you've failed with a character when people have an emotional reaction different from the one you intended for the character.

The best written characters are those whom player can complete himself, "do it yourself" characters. There must be enough writing to trigger ANY emotions and imagination, make player involved, make player project his own chosen image of character. But not too much of writing - or you will have Liara (or Garrus, by the way) Good writing does not tell you who is this character or companion to you (or your hero)- it just gives you enough info to decide.

Anders is good written. He can be an Evil Manipulator, Imbalanced Psycho, Whiny Looser, Stupid Idealist or (as some codex writings say) Tender Lover. Any of mentioned does not contradict in-game canon, and does not break lore and plot. Any can be accepted as lore-friendly headcanon.

Same goes for Merrill, and I know that just because I did not like her - it does not mean she was written badly. I'd say - it's second strongest arc in game (after Anders).

Varric, on the other hand....is much less "free" for interpreations. Friend or rival - he's some kind of Hawke's Bro (which ends with telling stories in his\\her mansion). I liked him, a lot, but I know that some may not like him - if they do not accept his bro-ship and not much interested in his stories. But he's same "forced" into hero's friends as ME2+3 Garrus.

Overally - I don't think that DA2 characters were weaker or worse. True, however that you could have more "free" screen-time with them. Better - talking about something not related to "job". Like, probably, cats. Or ships. Or....whatever. As DA2 gives it to us - we have litttle to none chances of knowing and feeling them better and building relations more often than once per chapter while accepting-giving in personal quest. Within chosen game design limits - writers and actors did their best (or even slightly more).

Another few examples of good written characters from my pov - Arishok, Kaidan Alenko, Legion(I'd call him a masterpiece, actually), Modrin Solus. I'd have to add Alistair - not my cup of tea, and way too linear, but writing was nice.

Charachter is a failure when there is no emotional reaction at all.

Yeah I have to agree. Too many companions has the risk of ruining quality. I rather have small number of well written companions. However I feel that DA2's main problem was not too many companions. I think it's main problem was the fact that it was rushed and felt incomplete

I noticed that as BioWare Games' Quality decreases, also the Party Members number in their games do...

Think of the companions of Kotor, Mass Effect 2, or DA Origns (a lot.......)

and now think of Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3. They say it is because so you have more attachment, and the chance to go deeper into the characters... but IMHO the companions from Origins and Kotor were more and more deep then the ones of DA2 or ME3...<_<

I don't belive the two are actually related it sort of just seems that way.  For instance, Mass Effect 2 had many PM, yet still many did not like that game.  Plus DA2 had a rather large number of companions and it is my 2nd least favorite Bioware game.

It's not related. It's just an excuse to faster make games for EA.
