I sure as heck hope that Gaxxkang is not harder than the Archdemon. Just killed him yesterday with my PC on level 20 (everyone else 19) with a party composed to Wynne, Zeveran and Ogrhen and he went down pretty easily on normal difficulty.

If you use the ballistas the arch demon is a joke, no ifs ands or buts about it. Choosing to melee it for the duration is another matter.

Gaxxkang is more difficult because he is optional, archdemon is not. I'm talking strictly on a stand-alone basis. the only reason the archdemon could give anyone pause is all the chaos around him. Sure, you can cheese your way through the encounter(manaclash/dextank/etc), but all-in-all Gaxxkang is programmed to be the harder fight because you don't need to kill him. All the optional bosses are.

I had a harder time with Gaxkang than the Archdemon. I beat the Archdemon on the first try, though it wasn't easy, and it took me 3 tries to kill Gaxkang, the first of which lasted like 30 seconds.

Also, dissapointment is a result of expectations, so no I wasn't dissapointed in how "easy" Gaxkand was like other posters here, because I don't raise my expectations to ridiculous, nostalgia-inflated levels before hand. That's just asking for trouble.

Why the necro?

As for the original question... it depends. If you spend five minutes preparing for Gaxxkang it's hard to lose. On the other hand I think it's hard to lose to the archdemon if you use sound strategy, so...

Neither of them would rank in my top three hardest encounters.

Blast from the past!

Well, in case anyone was curious, at least as far as the game is concerned, Gaxkang is not more powerful than the Archdemon. I originally asked because after beating the game, it listed Gaxkang as my strongest foe defeated. I'd link to the character profile in question, however I loaded up an old save and it seems to have.... un-updated him back to when he did the Broodmother fight. Oi vey. But it did eventually update in his heroic stats that Archdemon was his most powerful foe slain, not Gaxkang.

/thread =D

[W/o reading three pages of discussion.]

I generally KO GaxKang in about 2 minutes; the archdemon takes 10-15.

My straightforward attack is a Cone of Cold and get the Rogue behind him.  Then everybody just pounds away.  Winter's Grasp, Stonefist and refresh Cone of Cold as often as possible.   (2 Mages assures that he stays frozen the entire time.)

Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am.

Gaxkang was impossible to beat for me when I first faced them, so I decided to wait until a higher level (same with Flemeth actually). Sadly I got caught up in the endgame and couldn't go back to fight them. Is there any way of seing the level of enemies? There should be some indication of when a fight is within your level-range.

Without resort to the Bestiary of a Game Guide, the only way to gauge opponents is by their name label color:
white = cannonfodder
yellow = tough
organge = BOSS

On that scale Gaxkang and the archdemon _appear_ to be equally challenging.

Hard to say which is actually tougher.  Imagine how challenging Gaxkang _might_ have been, had he had a swarm of several score of darkspawn to try keeping you distracted.

Gaxkang, riding the Archdemon, while wielding the Broodmother as a flail.

Should be . . . entertaining to say the least.

I figure that Gaxkang and Flemeth are supposed to be at least among the most challanging fights in the game. The actuall difficulty you face has to do with when during your playthrough you face them, though. Concider the Ogres and Revenants, those are really tough the first times, but become trivial when you reach a certain level. The reason some people (like me for instance) have had trouble with a few of these bosses might have something to do with how early in the game you tried to take them on. I reckon you should be at least level 18 or something to even make an attempt.

Since the archdemon is the last boss, you really can't get to him when you're much lower than that, otherwise people might feel differently about which fight is tougher.

The reason gaxkang is so strong is exacly like someone said:

What sucks about fighting him is that he's completely immune to almost EVERY magical attack and CC or debuff talent you can throw at him. You can't stun him, can't knock him down, can't freeze him.
