I'm gonna start a playthrough soon as Mage. I know the most powerful specialization is the Blood Mage, but due to the way I want to play my character, I don't want to do that. Any opinions on what path I should take?

Actually, most people (including me) consider force mage to be the most powerful mage spec. Obviously, you should go down the force mage/spirit healer path. If you're not playing on nightmare, get spirit healer for the spec bonus, most of force mage, elemental, most of creation, hex of torment and horror. If you're on nightmare and don't really know what you're doing, put in primal for elemental, get force mage only for the spec bonus then replace the skills with non-ff skills from spirit and arcane.

Honestly, I like spirit healer/blood mage, especially for SH's Second Chance. Then again, I'm not necessarily that good at the game, but...

Blood Mage is pretty useless in a lot of situations. They are useful against a single opponent and their wide range spell can be good for combination with other class, but they use up almost all of your resources. When you have to face strong bosses in higher difficulty, it's not as useful as Force Mage and spiritual healer since the bosses are often immune to a lot of the spells of Blood Mages.

Force is one of the strongest mage specs? Strange couldn't sworn it seemed pretty useless in my mage playthrough even with everything form the spec taken, most of the time it just seemed a minor distraction and didn't really do whole lot.

it depends on how you play.

Blood mage is useless even it should be "the horrible magic".

Force is the strongest spec. Knowing how to use the tree should come before critical evaluation of it's effectiveness.
click the Arelex mage guide link in my signature for some examples of how to use the tree to its full potential.
