Dalish playthrough but missed a part?

I've played through a lot of class / race combinations so far.  When I was doing the Dalish elves, I'd stopped around Orzammar, having completed Redcliffe, the Mage tower, the Urn and the other Dalish plus a couple of Denerim bits and pieces.

I was of the understanding that when you've completed 4/5 or 5/5 of these major plot lines you get the camp attack thingy where Darkspawn come in to the camp and try to steal your stuff, short-sheet your bedrolls and put worms in your stew.  And as this is the spoiler forum, I am aware that Tamlen makes a return appearance.

I didn't get that attack in my playthrough, am I missing something which would add to the Dalish storyline in any detail?

As to how I missed it, I don't know.  Maybe it was something to do with patching because I left the elf character for quite a while and came back to him to finish up.  I've already gone on and completed the game with this elf, but its' still enough fun to roll another Dalish - maybe go female rogue instead of male warrior second time around.

I've had the camp attacked every playthrough except if I leave Redcliffe and the Ashes until last, then it never seems to happen

Yeah, my first playthrough I left redcliffe and ashes for last and never had my camp attacked. On my 2nd and 3rd playthroughs I did redcliffe early (but not ashes) and my camp got attacked.

But I have also heard it is just random.

I have had one playthrough where I didn't get the camp attack at all. So I do think it's a random occurrence that might happen at a certain point of a game, but might not.

Wiki:
After recruiting two of the four groups of allies, there will be a short cutscene of the Archdemon. Subsequently, a group of Shrieks will attack - while you have no party to command, all your companions will join the fray.

And yes it's random (I think).

My first playthrough, I did Redcliffe/Ashes first and yet still had no attack. I didn't even know about it until my second playthrough with a city elf. It took me by complete surprise.

Just letting you know, I saved Redcliffe for last, and the attack on camp triggered on my way to Denerim. So it may be random or a bug.
