Real French people sound pretty normal, you know.  In fact, they sound just like you and me ... just with an accent.

I have learned English at French school (I am a naturalized French) and thus, I am intimately familiar with how the French accent can break English language.
I think that people who think they dislike the supposed 'French' Orlesian accent actually confuse a few different things. In DA there are characters who, in my own perception, have :

_ An accurate French accent, slight (like Riordan's) or strong (like Baron Arlange's).
_ A French accent which sounds fake to me, slight (like Leliana's) or strong (like Marjolaine's or Lady Isolde's).
How odd sounds this fake accent being proportionate to its strength.
BTW, how truly French sounds this accent doesn't necessarily improve with French native voice actors. It all depends on what the voice director asked to them.

_ An unpleasant way of speaking regardless of accent.
It's a rather personal matter. In my case, I wouldn't enjoy a game where everybody would speak like Niall, the lost mage in the Fade.

Of course, some characters are blessed with a mix of those factors : IMO, Marjolaine has BOTH an unpleasant way of speaking AND a strong fake French accent. (It's off-topic, but I think BW lost a good opportunity to portray an impressive character. As a masterspy she would have looked much more dangerous if she had spoken with a flawless Fereldan accent.)
Baron Arlange has a true French accent (if strongly exaggerated) but his voice is still unpleasant to me (who have  a rather strong accent while speaking English) because he has such a ridiculous way of speaking, regardless of that accent.

Most characters who have unpleasant voices are usually unpleasant or comic (ridiculous) characters in DA, or characters who go through an unpleasant mood at some point in the game (I found both Alistair and Teyrn Loghain had grating voices when they were angrily shouting during the Landsmeet, while both of them could make their voices sound really nice at other times.)

If Bioware sets a part of DA3 storyline in Orlais and makes most of the Orlesians jerks and/or buffoons, like they did before, that would justify they all get grating voices...

Hey, I use to hate italians accents till Assassin's Creed made me think otherwise. If they keep them at low and not over the top accents, I am sure we'll be fine.

That the accents are due to either the voice actors not being Francophone (French, Walloon, Quebecois etc.) or the instructions of the 'voice director' was clear to me too. But I hadn't considered the fact that, well, people can confuse a voice they don't like personally, or sometimes the emotion / attitude that is conveyed (anger, arrogance etc.) with disliking the accent.

Regarding the 'lost opportunity' with Marjolaine, I think they completely blew it. The accent turned Marjolaine into a silly, rather than an imposing / believably dangerous character.

Being Dutch, one of the most hilarious accents is that of Goldmember in one of the Austin Powers movies.
I mean, the accent is meant to be funny, alright, but it's not even recognisable as a Dutch accent, not even a parody of it.

Very well said – the way a character is portrayed has a big impact on the way that his or her voice and accent are perceived, and the voice direction can have a big impact on how natural an accent sounds to the listener, whether or not the voice actor is a native speaker.

As far as Leliana's accent is concerned, I know that her voice actress, Corinne Kempa, is French, but I believe that she lives in the UK, and if that's the case, it might explain why Leliana's accent doesn't quite sound like a typical French accent. Personally, I think she has a beautiful voice, and I really love listening to her speak.

I also thought that Riordan's accent really suited his world-weary and rugged, yet soft-spoken and sensitive personality – I could listen to his voice all day!

The funny thing is I didn't heard that Riordan had an accent at all, when my characters met him. (Compared to my own thick accent he sounds very 'normal' English.)

Then I listened his voice more carefully and, yes, he has an real french accent (albeit a very slight one).

I know that one's accent can vary from the 'usual' national accent(s) if a person's actual mother language is not the standard language, but a distinctive dialect / regional language. For instance, there is a certain way that people who think and speak standard Dutch (or something close to it) are likely to (mis)pronounce English, but somebody who speaks, say, Twents (an eastern dialect) clearly has a different accent when speaking English.
Did a little digging, and Corinne Kempa studied in Lille; besides, her surname is apparently fairly common up there. Maybe her actual mother tongue is Ch'ti? www.youtube.com/watch

True, it could be the reason why I didn't recognize it (I never been in the northern France).
But TBH I have some doubts : All the professional actors I've heard usually erase their own native accent (they can make it come back or imitate another on purpose, however.)

The whole problem is that in orlais they should not speak English WITH a French accent, they should speak French (or Orlesian, rather). In the French version (translation)of Dragon Age, FYI, Fereldans don't speak with English accents in French.

French accents can be done well providing they aren't too shrill or drawling. This is what we've seen a lot of since Orlesians have been heavily used for comic relief. 

I'd expect Orlesian peasants to have less prominent (maybe even cockney) accents compared to the nobility, who are - by and large - fops and dandys who are written in often for humour (hence the voices). 

Leliana didn't have a bad voice (though I still think it's a little sickly sweet), nor did Stroud. 

As for Isolde, the voice was grating, but I thought the acting itself was pretty good. Listen to her here when she kills Connor, she (IMO) captures pretty well the desperation and heartbreak of a woman trying to save her child, only to kill him herself.
