I personally love the French accents, but i've been around enough french people to notice real ones and fake ones. Unless there are greatly differing dialects of the french accent that i have never heard (which is totally possible), i'm not to sure the majority of ones in Mark of the Assassin were too authentic. Now some characters, such as Dulci Delcance, i found the accent appropriate for her character.

I wouldn't mind if the PC will have a French accent, but the fact that one of DA3's main location is/could be Orlais doesn't mean that we're going to play as an Orlesian.
I only hope we'll not play as a Fereldan again. Two games were enough. Time for a man/woman from another place to shine.

I like Orlesian accents. There's a certain authenticity to Thedas when each nation has different accents.

I don't enjoy Orlesian accents, either - hopefully not every quest will happen in Orlais. (And hopefully Morrigan, Loghain and Loghain's Old God Baby will give them hell. Heheh). But maybe that's because we haven't had a single interesting character with an Orlesian accent(Isolde, Leliana, Duke Prosper - not really a funny bunch, unlike, say, Antivans). Let's wait and see. But, yeah, I'm totally against PC having a mandatory accent, be it Russian(I'm Russian), Orlesian, Qunari or Antivan.

Bioware so far never failed me with voice actors. I played in most cases for female characters - and both Commander Shepard and Hawke had a great voice actresses.

If Bioware decided to pick a French actress for it i have no problem with it, just make sure she sounds like an Inquisitor - Cassandra was good for instance.

One Clouseau on the game would be funny. A city full of Closeaus would make me want to hit the speakers with a sledge hammer

Some of the 'outrageous accents' were a tad grating but at the same time rather humorous since they seemed to be overdone on purpose, it if wasn't on purpose.. well..

Isolde was memorable, that's for sure!

I don't know if you got it and were agreeing with me, but I was obviously being very dry when I said that. I was annoyed that people in this thread seemed to be so amazingly ignorant about French people in general.

Most of the "Orlesian" accents sound exaggerated to me. A regular, middle-class French person with decent English-speaking skills sounds ... I don't know how to properly describe it. Like a regular guy speaking English with an accent. I've got a friend who visited from France recently; sometimes I can't understand what he says and I just go, "huh?" and he says it again, and I get it. He doesn't sound like Leliana or Duke Prosper or Isolde or any of those silly billies lol 

It doesn't help that the game itself plays into real world stereotypes regarding French accents. Hawke makes fun of DuPuis's name and jokes about practicing his Orlesian accent. Oh, I will say that to me what sounded kind of authentic was the elven servant in MOTA. She sounded like your run of the mill French person speaking English. Except she was very easy to understand, which I've found, when talking to real people with accents, is not always the case lol

This actually does come up. For the most part, we try to go with authentic accents whenever we can-- meaning we get actors who actually possess that accent in their natural speaking voice. Sometimes, however, it's difficult to find authentic accents which are also easily intelligible (not everyone who speaks English as a second language does so fluently). You'd figure it'd be easier, but finding someone with a particular accent who also speaks English naturally and is a talented voice actor AND is available is often... challenging.

Even so, we still manage it most of the time. Sometimes we'll go instead with someone who has a voice we like or an acting ability we prefer... though I usually find it hilarious when fans pick over how fake an accent is when they're wrong about 75% of the time. I still remember the number of people talking about Corinne Kempa's fake accent, which was amusing.

Insofar as Orlesian accents go, if they were to be more common in a game we would undoubtedly have more of a range in them. Not every Orlesian character needs to be a snooty noble or needs to have a Parisian accent to sound French... and if there's more such characters, there's far less need to make them stand out.

@Dintonta: Thanks for your reply – it hadn't occurred to me that Riordan's French accent might be slight enough to go unnoticed by a natural French speaker! That makes sense to me – I know that if I heard someone speaking French with a slight Anglo-Canadian accent, I might not notice the Canadian accent either, being a Canadian English speaker myself!

My family background is German Mennonite, and my grandparents on my Father's side grew up speaking a German dialect called Pennsylvania Dutch – it was quite commonly spoken among Mennonites of German descent until the World War II era. My grandfather in particular spoke English with a strong Pennsylvania Dutch accent all his life. In a Pennsylvania Dutch accent, the "j" sound is pronounced as a "ch," so instead of "Jill," he always called me "Chill." :happy: Just the other night, I watched a video recording of him acting in a community play written by a family friend, and hearing his accent again brought back so many great memories!

But to stay on topic, I think it would be great to hear a wider range of French accents in DA3, the way we heard a variety of British accents in DA:O and DA2.

I'd also love for Dragon Age to include some Pennsylvania Dutch accents, but there's no point in getting greedy!

That's fascinating – I hadn't realized that Dutch pronunciation has such similarities to the German Pennsylvania Dutch dialect! It makes sense, though – German and Dutch are closely related languages, after all. I wonder whether your accent would remind me of the Pennsylvania Dutch speakers I've grown up around? :happy:

Out of curiosity, what's the meaning of your username in Dutch, if you don't mind my asking? Is it a Dutch proper name?

My dialect is more simular to German then to Dutch when you break it down.

In proper Dutch it would be spelled "spellenspeler"

Translated in english it means "gamesplayer"

Dialects do not really have a name because they differ almost from town to town. But I live in the province Limburg so the dialects are all collected in 'Limburgs' dialect.

As comparison: my name in german would be Spielespieler

Wait, people thought Leliana's accent was fake? 

A range of Orlesian accents would be interesting to hear though.  I mean, I'm sure an empire like that would have regional accents.  Bring on Henry Higgins!
