I feel like most of my crew-member talks are just mindless
clicking of the upper dialogue choice. It is no longer role playing,
it is watching. An easy way to stop this would be to randomise the
position of the answers. But they would have to become clearer at the same time.
I am of course not saying that this should be changed in ME3, as that's no longer
possible. But for future games, maybe?

Opinions?

Should try DA2, where there is an obvious flirt option. Even more easy.

Part of me agrees it should be less obvious, but then another part of me hated ME1 where I would accidentally romance someone. I'm fine with how it is, its up to the player on how much they care. If you care, you listen to the dialogue.

I tried DAO and disliked it. Heard DA2 is even worse. Maybe someday I'll try.

In DAO romances were more difficult as it wasn't so obvious which response to choose. Wish it was similar in Mass Effect. I remember my dissapointment when at the end of the game I learned that Alistair wasn't hardened and therefore he left my Warden :( But it was good, because the game was more interesting thanks to that.

Yeah I think DAO handled it perfectly for romances. It was possible to mess them up. It was fairly clear when you were flirting, when you were taking a romance to the next level, etc. Characters acted rather human, for lack of a better phrase. Only thing that was a little bad was the actual romance scenes, which screamed cheesy.

Edit: Leaving the warden, or even sacrificing himself to save her, while unforseen made him an autonomous person and far better of a character. Simply obeying the player blindly makes for poor characters.

I don't mind it that much. I think the closest thing to a dificult relationship is (I think) Jacob can break up with you if you talk to him too much.

And then ME3 where you have to do spesific things to make sure each character lives.

Try Thane's romance. No matter what choices you make, he leaves you...

You can have a very different Jack mindset at the end of ME2 and not the "Renegade" sex, pursuing the Paragon romance while using neutral or renegade suits her better (IMO) and has her having a differnet approach to situations. I prefer the dialogue with neutral, Paragon sounds to keen on trying to "fix" her right away and that didn't really vibe with me.  Too bad most of that isn't taken into consideration while developing her arc in ME3.

I can relate to this, yes.
I think it's sometimes odd that being extraordinary charming (upper option) is always working.

The nice change would be that some romance-options are turned off by some responses like that. Dragon Age actually made a little attempt in that direction: If you constantly just agreed with Morrigan, she asked you if you also had your own mind. Would be cool if that would have denied the romance at some point.

This thread, I agree with it. Though I don't think they oversimplified romances, they oversimplified companions overall. Both romanced and unromanced

The romance aspect of the games is secondary. It's not a dating sim. Simplified by necessity.

Seems DA2 is what I wanted. The game is too Paragon based, IMHO. The choice between the two should be:
a) Renegade is calculating Shepard, be mean because it is worth it
B) Paragon Shepard is the one believing in morality.
What they did is basically Shepard good and Shepard evil, and that's it. It's not even worth being bad. Though I wandered off the topic a bit...

Necessity? I don't see any necessity.

How to start a romance in Mass Effect:
Before you start, search them on Google if they're a LI.
1. Go to your LI's room/office.
2. Talk.
3. Pick top option.
4. Take a nap while your LI explains life story.
5. ???
6. Shepard gets laid.

And no, it isn't that easy in reality. It could be like DAO's romance style,
