So, I wasn't too terribly sure on exactly where this question would fit best - so if this could be, I don't know, moved to a more appropriate forum (if there is one), that would be appreciated.

Anyways, I'm doing a roleplay with one of my friends, that takes place about two years before the events of Dragon Age: Origins. So far only two of our characters have been introduced, though my "main" is a runaway city elf that is a mage (long story short, she got into a very desprite situation and had to fall back on her magical abilities to escape) that is seeking to find the Dalish and join their clan. (Friends character in question is Dalish)

Now, obviously this is fan stuff - and it's also just for fun, obviously - but I'd like to be able to keep as close to the lore as I can. Now, I know the Dalish can and will take in elves (such as the case with Pol), but I'm not quite sure on how exactly they would respond to a... mage.
Obviously mages are incrediably important to a clan's survival, and magic is also a rare trait (for example, Merrill was from a clan that already had three mages born into it, so she was given to another one), and it's also a trait that is more likely to be passed on when one of the parents is a mage.

So, I would image that they would be willing to take her in, right? I know we will be having some plot twists that make this so it doesn't occure, but I just want to know on how... I don't know, "well" the clan would recieve her/be willing to take her in.

Same as any other City Elf returning to the Dalish ways. Instead of being apprenticed to a hunter or craftsmen though the mage would become the Keeper's First (if she doesn't have one) or just an apprentice (if she has a First). But Elves don't descriminate against magic the way humans do. To them it is simply a tool, like a bow or a smiths hammer. But she would need to be trained by the Keeper to make sure she is safe from demons.

I think it would partly depend on the clan in question and its Keeper (compare Marethari to Zathrian).

In any case, Lanaya was originally a city elf whose parents were murdered by bandits and who was then forced to work as a slave for those bandits, until they killed a hunter from Zathrian's clan and Zathrian destroyed them for it. I don't remember her mentioning how old she was when she lost her parents / was taken in by the Dalish, though. But she did manage to become Zathrian's first despite her heritage.

There are two examples I know of where elven mages joined the Dalish:

1) Lanaya, Zathrian's First, was not born to the Dalish, but she was adopted by them when Zathrian slew the bandits that had abducted her. She did face fierce competition to become the First of her clan, in part because she was not born to the Dalish.

2) Aneirin, who was Wynne's apprentice, joined Zathrian's clan after he ran away from the Circle of Magi. He did live apart from them, but from what I can tell, that was by Aneirin's choosing.

From what I can tell, the Dalish elves' reaction to mages is the same as any city elf. They'll welcome city elves who want to join the Dalish, but converts still have to contend with a bit of prejudice.

EDIT: Curses, someone mentioned Lanaya before I did.

Hey guys! Thanks so much for the responses. :)

I had a feeling they would be okay, though I wasn't too terribly sure how they could feel about a mage who was pretty close to adulthood (I don't have an exact age figured out for her yet, but she's around the 15-18 years mark), and for the most part, relatively untrained in her magic - I forgot about Lanaya... I remembered that she was taken into the clan, but I forgot that uhm... how it's inferred that the bandits abused her sexually, so I didn't take into account that she could have very well been a teenager - I was thinking that she was still quite young when she was taken into the clan.

Again, thankyou!

No mention of Feynriel? He's a half-elf mage, and the Dalish will take and train him. Granted, that's after your story is set, but I don't think their behavior would have changed much.
