The Myth of Romancing Fenris

I am becoming convinced that the idea that Fenris can be romanced is an elaborate practical joke. For sure, I can't do it. At the end of "A Bitter Pill," where there's supposed to be a second "Heart" option in our conversation, where he either rejects Hawke or goes to bed with her...there is no option. It doesn't exist. I cannot select it, so the conversation always ends with Fenris just leaving with nothing more being said. And no matter how many times I do the quest over or what I do differently, it still doesn't exist.

Considering that I've already redone the entirety of Act II up to that point because it was the only way to go back to the beginning of the quest, I am nova-pissed right now. I've just played the same five hours of game over twice now. I want my romance or I want the ten hours of my life back.

You did Questioning Beliefs before A Bitter Pill, right?

Did you ask the slave elf to move in? There is a glitch that makes Fenris refuses your advance if you do.

I did the first time. But I have since gone back and done the mission over and not asked her to move in.

And it's not so much that he refuses my advance as that I'm not given the option of making one.

Strange, you didn't sleep with any other characters, right? Not even Isabella? I think the best way to pursue Fenris is to avoid making any advance toward any character. His romance is very glitchy, so I tried to avoid triggering any flag with any other character and was able to romance him the first time I did it.

Well, crap. I did sleep with other characters.

That's the problem. His character doesn't like cheating, so you can't sleep with anyone PRIOR to him. If you sleep with anyone AFTER him, your relationship would still end automatically. In other words, he's similar to Sebastian in that you have to stay faithful to him til the end.

. . .

It specifically said on DAWiki that Hawke could sleep with other companions before him, but not after.

Goddammit.

Yeah, the Wiki is often hilariously inaccurate.

It can be edited by anyone, so I wouldn't trust it too much. Depending on the patch, sometimes the game will glitch and register that you are still in a relationship with the character you slept with, usually Isabela, even after you have broken up with them. Due to this, Fenris' flag will not be raised since you have already in a relationship with another character. I had this issue before as well, but it was solved after I tried to avoid sleeping with other companions.

Did you specifically break up with those characters before Fenris though? As far as I remember from my seriously bollocksed up Fenris playthrough (aka ForeverAloneHawke) you have to actively split up those you sleep with by picking the broken heart icon to stop all relationship flags with that character as ANY of these will stop him falling for you. Like CM said, Isabela's flag is particularly bad for this...

Yeah, I got ninjamanced by Isabela on one of my Fenris PTs as well, and it was pretty obvious since I did one conversation after the other. Had to back up and skip Isabela.

Wiki is tough since so many of the things changed from patch to patch that I bet some aren't always updated.

along with other things already said - if it wasn't mentioned already, where was the friend/rival scale at?

I missed out the Fenris romance on first PT, got to mid act 3 nothing romantic happening, asked around here and it was because I had kept his approval rating right in the middle. (Reloaded back to act 1, got that rival scale up and the romance worked)

(edit to add- I always have Orana, the elf slave, move in with me, I do offer to pay her. Fenris romance will still work with that option)

With Fenris....don't flirt with others.
hit every flirt line.( I think in questionning belief if you skip some special line , the love scene won't trigger.)
And check that in act 2 you get to 50 % friend or rival ...just enough to have questionning belief.
And act 3 , you should hit 100% friend or rival and have the second questionning belief.

So flirt with him /don't flirt with others/ get him at 50% percent friend/rival by act 2/100% at act 3...
And if there's no bug , it should be fine.

I've always had Orana move in (as a servant, not a slave) and have successfully romanced Fenris several times. I never had that bug. I DID get messed up once when I was doing a convo with him where he asks about others Hawke is interested in (I think that's how it goes) and she/he has to say that they want ONLY Fenris. I picked some snarky line instead and because of it, the romance didn't fire like it was supposed to. I did all the other quests, and resisted flirting with anyone else before A Bitter Pill and when the heart option was supposed to come up, it didn't.

OP I have the exact same problem! Even when I make Hawke stay single and not flirt with or shag anyone. Maybe I'm not Fenris' type lol!

Hmmmm.....it is strange that some have had such problems with romancing Fenris. I have known of some of the issues since the game first came out. But, even my very first Hawke (whom I initially thought I would romance Anders....afterall, I had played Awakenings and adored him), was still able to romance Fenris even with a less than easy/clean play through. Hell, I didn't even max out his friendship path until I agreed to duel the Arishok (Isabella had run off for good before hand, since she was somewhat "neutral"), thanks to his "talking too" with the Arishok about the duel.

Not trying to make anyone feel bad....some games are glitchy (have had my fair share of games like that.....). Easiest way to ensure you successfully romance him though, is to follow what others have said. Do NOT try and romance anyone else (even though there are ways to do this, it can be a bit tricky....and 'metagamey'). Be sure to do the QB in Act 2 before Hadrianna (yes, you can technically do the QB after Hadrianna, but supposedly it CAN cause problems), and safest to get him to 100% Friendship/Rivalry BEFORE Act. 3. That way the QB in Act 3 initiates properly, and you can truly be on track for the "Final Straw".

Happy Gaming, all!! :D

My Fenris romance played out a little bit differently. He left after "A Bitter Pill". I also didn't get any option to make him stay. But it's still possible to romance him after that. During the dialogue or shortly after that, I got some points with him and hit 50%. Then he showed up at Hawke's estate... and... well, got the red ribbon.

I didn't flirt with any other characters though.

Did you still get the full romance scene?

Well, it's my first playthrough so I don't know how the one after A Bitter Pill is supposed to look like. But I would say so. He had been waiting in the estate, told Hawke he couldn't stop thinking about her and asked her to tell him to either stay or leave. After being told to stay, he kissed her and... Yeah, I think I got it. Also the dialogue afterwards.

I wonder if the scenes are any different.

Yes, I've had that happen on my first playthrough as well. When you do his QB after A Bitter Pill, he will show up at your house later to do the romance scene. From then on it's the same as when you would have had it immediately after A Bitter Pill.
