Make it like the good Flashpoint missions in SWTOR, keep it as separate as possible from the single player portion, but give it story elements so that it doesn't end up like ME3's MP-- a generic horde mode that tries to cling to lore rules without any real reason to do so.
Think of something like "Build-A-Warden" where you create a DA:O-like character with customized backgrounds, and you then take part in various mini-story missions with other players online, then build up XP to gain better powers/equipment as you progress into harder missions. Bioware could then send out updates in a similar way to what Halo 4 is planning, to keep MP fresh until the community inevitably dwindles down to only the hardcore players who'll keep playing regardless.
I'd certainly be excited for that.
How I think MP could work in DA3

I dont get whats so hard about making this happen...
1 CO-OP thru offline and online
Drop in Drop out like Tales of Vesperia/ any Tales game while in offline. Online works according to host. If your the host, party members use stats of Host party. If you join a game and not host, you use other person's party stats for the character you chose or that's available. Simple. If your around that person's area in the game, they can add an arcade like online feature where if the game senses you and someone else online is at the same fight/ dungeon, you can get paired with them if you accept giving access to people online. If not deny access and go solo.
2 Separate mode. Fight some randomly insane hordes that need humans to go all out online.

Judging from how they did MP in ME3, don't expect any sort of story at all.

I'm not bothered by multiplayer if it never touched upon singleplayer, I mean I probably will play the multiplayer with my friend but it shouldn't be a chore to play it do you get your war readiness up, which I slightly fear DA3 will have. It should just be a thing where people play against one another, not a singleplayer requirement.

MP will happen, specifically after ME3. It will have some form of influence on SP. it has to, at least from a "relevance" perspective, have some influence on the SP part. IT will probably form a similar cooperative game mode as in ME3 and that needs to be integrated into the "narrative" to make some sense.
The question probably is more in what way does it influence. Will it have any bearings on the potential outcome? Or will be just be some gameplay benefits (e.g. you enjoyed MP now as a reward here you get a "bit better sword exclusive to MP veterans" OR some form of small sidequest after e.g. liberating the small village from Templar / Mage group).

Im just saying how I think they could work it based on what they have been hinting at, saying that MP might be in DA3.. I didn't just pull it out of thin air..

Pretty much this is what I was thinking, something similar where you get a separate character (like in Mass Effect 3) that you can create for yourself to team up with other players in side quests and missions. This can make for infinite content in the end if done correctly. Maybe do random dungeon crawls as an option as well, or mission-based teams that would be long-term campaigns.

BG-style MP might convince me to pick DA3 on sale several months after release, rather than a complete no-buy.

I am probably far too optimistic but if they bring back a sort of origin system they could make a cooperative system where every player plays another origin.
In DAO when you reach certain point of the scenario you can realize that the characters of the other origins existed but did not survive (probably because Duncan wasn’t there to help/save them).
Why not imagine a system where the characters of the other origins survived and became your companions (with a canon personality for the PNJ of each origin).
In case you play in cooperative mode each player would have to play a character of a different origin (and would take the place of the corresponding PNJ).
I highly doubt that the current Bioware team would have the cleverness of bringing back any form of origin system but, to my point of view, it would be the best way to implement multiplayer in a DA game.

I would rather see a stand alone DA mp game. Something blending organized play like Living Greyhawk with flashpoints from SWTOR. Base game comes with about 40 one hour linked (story wise) adventures. You team up with three other people through LAN or a matchmaking service and run the adventure. New adventures could be released monthly for like 5.99.
I would want it separate from the core series though. Maybe have it take place during a previous blight.

I wouldn't care if bioware didn't do multiplayer, but if they did, they could definitely design it with a story connection to the singleplayer game. I don't mean in terms of game mechanics, that's what Mass Effect 3 messed up, but what Mass Effect 3 did right was to give multiplayer context in the main story. Consider what multiplayer is to Halo 4, as we've heard of it. The normal pvp multiplayer is really the Spartan IV's training in a "holodeck"-esque environment aboard the UNSC Infinity. The co-op Spartan Ops missions are story events that take place after the main plot. The Spartan Ops, imagine a group of story based adventures in Ferelden during or around the same time as the primary plot or something, are released episodically. So imagine receiving a new batch of story content every once in a while for months after the release of the main game besides singleplayer DLC.
This is a great way to do multiplayer, something as its own story experience rather than trying too hard to attach itself too closely the main plot of Halo 4.
