Pretty much all of the normal maps for faces I've gone through aren't the usual purple-tinged DXT5 format .DDS files.

When I look at them in Bridge, or IrfanView, they look like this:

But when I open them in Photoshop, they look like the DXT5 normals I'm used to:

After looking in to it, and opening one of Liara's .pcc's in UE Viewer, I found out that the normal is saved in the u8v8 format
8.8            VU  16 bpp | signed

But my problem is; no matter what, I can't get them to save-then-look like the Red-Yellow-Green normals. I figure it's because one of the settings isn't right when saving the DDS, but there's so many settings that I'm unfamiliar with, I don't know which one(s) it is. I've tried 16 different settings with the 8.8 VU format, to no avail.

I have a mod or two that has a high-res version of this kind of normal, so people can-and-have done this.

I was just wondering if someone could take screens of the different settings they used to achieve this? (Main save as dds window, Normal Map Settings..., Image Options..., MIP Map Filtering..., etc.)

Or, better yet, save the settings as a "DDS Save Profile", and upload the .DPF file so I could use it for myself?

Thanks.

It doesn't necessary need to look like those reddy-yellow ones.
The way that I've been using (and was informed to do) is to take the original map, open it in Photoshop. Resize it to the correct size that you want, then overlay your modified diffuse map (the highest quality one that looks like the end texture).
Then merge the two images. Then separate the red and green channels and paste them into separate layers. Then darken them each separately by taking the gamma down to like 0.3 (you can use trial and error for this). Once you've done that paste them back into their respective channels.
Then save the whole thing as a DXT1 .dds file. Don't put any Normal Map Settings on (untick "Convert to Tangent Space Normal Map"). Image options should just be standard stuff (Color Map). MIP maps aren't required.

It loaded, but looked bad.

After toying around, I think the .DDS format used is:
16.16 VU 32 bpp | signed
This way, the .DDS shows in IrfanView with the RED-YELLOW-GREEN look, but seems dithered on all channels, yet opens like a regular normal map.

Because it dithers, and is a larger size, I think there's an option in "Normal Map Settings" that needs to be changed, but I haven't figured out which one it is yet.

Any one who does, say so!

I'd also be very interested in getting an answer for this. My head is all confused.

Wow. That's actually a video I created. It's weird to see it being posted somewhere else.

Edit: The method in the video is a lot different to the one I originally suggested (3 months ago) at the top of the thread. This one actually does work.

By the way, here's the original link. It'd be nice if you watched on my youtube page instead of that other site :)

I wish I had clicked that link before you posted Salt, that would have been a humorous surprise.

That site owner is apparently a fan. :V

Just imagine my surprise when I clicked on it. Clicking on some random link on the internet and hearing your own voice on the other end is a somewhat strange experience...
