What do you think is/will be/would be the most monumental discovery in the history of humanity?

I'm not too sure on my own stance, but I'm just curious as to whether people are intimate human discoveries ( attain immortality), big question discoveries (why are we here?) or more grander (discovery of other sentient life)

It will be the discovery of other sentient life. It will send the whole world into chaos. Some will be excited, others will load up on guns and ammo.

I'd say probably the invention of language, which made possible abstract thinking and the sharing of more complex ideas.

I have no idea what the future holds, but the creation of toilet paper has to be humanity's greatest achievement so far.

I guess the biggest discovery would be to learn how to be immortal.
The day humans learn how to defeat death forever , I hope i won't be around.
I think it would be the beginning of the end . ^^

BLEH, it's all about the wipes man.

But on topic, I think that if we ever found away to truly cheat death it would be the greatest discovery in the history of ever, as it negates the only certainty we will ever have in life.

I can't say this discovery would necessarily lead to good things, but it would be pretty monumental.

But would it? Mortality is what ensures progress.

What do you think the world reaction would be if we found definitive proof that mankind came from somewhere else? For instance, we're on Mars now... let's say they find some time capsule or something with the history of how we left and went to Earth or better yet.... another race comes down from on high to check on thier science project - us?

Without toilet paper there would be no wipes.=]

But seriously a discovery of any type of immortality along with the discovery of sentient lifeforms in the galaxy, would be equally monumental to me.

Having lived in Japan for a while, I'd say the Japanese electronic washlet toilet is a greater invention than toilet paper.

Hmm...an electronic toilet that fires a jet of water up someone's @ss crack, sounds scandalous.

Well, the scientists in Prometheus didn't seem that amazed by it...

But in all honesty I think many would find it hard to accept and outright deny it in the case of overzealous religious fundamentalists, they'd probably think the discovery is part of the misguidance that comes withthe arrival of the antichrist or something. There'd be chaos to be sure.

Discovery of extraterrestrial life, especially if it's intelligent. That will shake most modern religions to their foundations. It will destroy this notion that we are some kind of supreme, privileged children of whatever god.

I haven't seen Prometheus yet.

I tend to agree with the rest of your comment, however. Pandemonium.

Agriculture - allowed high population density, the basis of civilization.

Quantum Physics - gives us a framework for understanding reality, and the universe.

Stem Cells / Cell Biology - will give us a shot at immortality. (Why do cells die, and what if we could stop the process, or simply replace them?)

Artificial Intelligence - obvious reasons.

Fire / combustion.

Think how little we could do today without having discovered it. We'd have perished as a species if our primitive ancestors hadn't discovered how to harness it and make it into a tool.

I would have to say the discovery that fried chicken can substitute bread in a sandwich.

God Bless Kentucky Fried Chicken.

But seriously, I would have to say the alphabet. It's so useful that society could have never advanced without it.
