Solar energy capture providing clean and plentiful energy.

Strong, lightweight materials that enable construction of Space Elevators and providing cheaper forms of space travel.

Immortality or greatly extended life spans would be disastrous fro the environment and the species. History is made by the young, not the older generations.

An alternative social system that replaces capitalism

I really like your choices. Especially that last one.

Well, I can't call this the biggest, but it's one of the biggest: The finding of the Titanic Wreck back in 1985.

As for the Future, I am hoping for FTL Travel, Artificial Gravity (Perfectly Made, like walking on Earth. NO side effects, Velcro, spinning, or hopping), First Contact, Interaction with Aliens, etc.

If they discover God or not. Seriously, it is the biggest question in mankind.

Discovery of extraterrestrial life, especially if it's intelligent. That will shake most modern religions to their foundations. It will destroy this notion that we are some kind of supreme, privileged children of whatever god.

This. There's no bigger discovery than finding life on another planet. As far as more realistic and attainable discoveries, I suspect genetics and cloning has much in store for our species.

I wonder if the Fishes have also that gland or not!

Being serious...

Past: Fire - Alphabet

Present: Electricity - Chemistry (aren't very old. are they?)

Future: Habitable Planets - FTL speed

----------

Also the God isn't a material being to be discovered empirical. There's other kind of beings besides material.

I would say that fire. Without it we wouldn't have gotten anywere and probably been wiped out by now. Also you can't get a good steak without fire!

Not necessarily all discoveries...
  • A sustained fusion reaction, which would mean that we can finally create fusion reactors to provide power.
  • The discovery of extraterrestial life (even in a microbial form).
  • Immortality.
  • Quantum computing.
  • The creation of true AIs.
  • Nanotechnology becoming more advanced than it is.
  • Advanced genetic manipulation.
  • Proving the existence of the Higgs boson (which they may have already done with the LHC on July 4th if it turns out to be true).
  • Medical advances such as implants to restore sight to the blind or improved prostheses for amputees.
  • Spaceflight becoming common and allowing us to travel to other worlds on a regular basis.

Movable type. It made stored knowledge affordable for just about everyone.

As for the future, probably cheap fusion energy. It's at least potentially possible of all the science fiction future ideas out there and cheap, sustainable energy would transform the world, maybe even the solar system.

Fire.

With fire we learned to cook our food, keep ourselves warm, communicate w/ others and illuminate the darkness that surrounded us.

Yeah I'm seriously considering buying some pink paint for my gun in Blacklight: Retribution.

I'd say probably the invention of language, which made possible abstract thinking and the sharing of more complex ideas.
