 G'day

I have been trying to duplicate the "blue" glow channel that a lot of modlers use to texture their models; the results I have seen from several community models all seem to have a sort of emboss texture to them.

I tried using Gimp to emboss a blue texture but the end result is not like what I've seen. Is this something that has to be done in a renderer or modelling prog?

Tips on process/method would be appreciated.

a blue glow channel? are you talking about the normal map?
if yes then it's hardly possible to create this manually. usually those maps are baked from a high poly source to the texture with the help of xnormal or within your 3d modeling app.

if there's no high poly source available but just a simple diffuse map, you can create the normal map with programs like shadermap, crazybump or bitmap2material. dunno if there're also free alternatives but the first two work very well and ain't that expensive.

there's even the option to create normal maps with the help of the nvidia dds plugin for photoshop, but the process is cumbersome and the result lacks quality.

ignore all the above if you're talking about real glow maps like the glowing tattoo of ammon. those are emissive maps.

Thanks Semper - normal map is what I was looking for - shadermap has a nice gui - I'll run with it
