But it wouldn't really make much sense for there to be an African equivalent in Thedas. In real life Africans have a very different facial structure to Europeans, but that's because they live on a completely separate continent, so are descended from a completely different set of people.

As all people in Thedas are descended from the original settlers of the region they should have the rough genetic diversity of medieval Europe. Similar facial structure with darker skin tones further north makes a lot more sense in the setting than having African themed tribes living in the middle of a Europe equivalent.

Either way, Brushy wins for using a pic of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He's a fave of mine. I originally saw him in the HBO series Oz. ^_^

LOL! I was absolutely wondering if/when anyone would recognize him! I totally have a man-crush on that man.  Posted Image

If I'm remembering this correctly (and I may not be) humans aren't actually originally from Thedas (the elves were, and the dwarves actually taught them the common language), so if the Fog Warriors are humans (which we can assume from Mr. Gaider's comments that they're not kossith, just people fighting to defend their land) they should share a common origin somewhere with the rest of the humans in Thedas.

Please don't assume that I'm trying to strictly tell anyone what their characters' facial structure should look like. I'm saying these ethnic groups look awesome and physically do a great job of representing (in my opinion) the spirit of Fenris' description of them. Note that they also wouldn't be living "in the middle of a European equivalent" at all, but far to the north in probably the hottest part of known Thedas on a large island we already know to be covered in jungle. Try to make that unrealistic if you wish. Posted Image

"They would look too different." isn't really the kind of argument that would sway me, because that's exactly the kind of thing I'm excited about!

As for the Anderfels, we've only ever met two people from there if I remember right - Anders, and the Grey Warden representative lady in Awakening. She might have been recruited from anywhere, and he could have come from a family of escaped slaves from Tevinter for all we know. But with the Anderfels being so far away from the eastern coastal breezes and so heavily blighted for centuries that nothing survives there, it may actually be quite cold without that being too unrealistic. Or maybe the inhabitants live in caves to escape the heat and still manage to stay quite fair. At this point we don't know enough about them to really speculate - but we do know a little about the Fog Warriors, and I'll take any opportunity to support ethnic diversity that I can (where it fits the lore and also looks awesome.) Seriously, where is the damage in that?

Wut? This is a game that has elves and dwarves, doesn't this mean anything goes? Real world rules don't exist? Isn't the whole point of diversity that people are...uh.. different?

I had to edit it for proper grammar and spelling since I couldn't before on my phone. <3

I think some people are assuming that temperature is the main environmental influence  related to skin colour. Erm, it might more have to do with sunlight. Although sexual selection has also been suggested as an influential factor (what I call the ‘gentlemen prefer blondes’ argument).
As for climate, a contintental climate a la the Anatolian plateau, the Castilian Meseta or Central Asia seems plausible, with hot summers and cold winters. In fact, much of Anderfels being an elevated plateau (thinner air – more exposure to sunlight) and a snow cover in winter reflecting sunlight might actually (even if only slightly) increase the environmental pressures favouring somewhat darker skin (compare Inuit, Andean highlanders).

Anyway, it’s not something I seriously suggest by the way. It was more as an example where deliberately pursuing the consistency-by-analogy argument can easily be used to undermine the objections of those who oppose ‘more diversity in Thedas’, but accept all the other 'mundane' (non-magical) aspects of the world without thinking.

Love the caves suggestion.
Maybe the Blights forced the Anderfels folk to take flight to fortified cave systems?B)

It’s not exactly a fachwerkhaus, but looks cosy enough…

Sshh! You'll summon Emzamination.

I wouldn't be against making the "fog warriors" a different "tribe" of humans, as a lore friendly way of including a "black" race in Thedas/Dragon Age.

As I said in the other thread, most things are okay if you have a self consistent good lore explanation.

This is almost exactly how I picture the dwellings in the Anderfels! Without the green stuff and the patio furniture, of course.  Posted Image

At some point after hearing about Weissaupt having the eyries carved straight into the rock somehow translated in my head into other structures being hewn straight into the mountainside too. Probably just me, but thanks for the awesome pic anyhow!!
