I keep hearing about him. I'm going to make a dwarf. I think I might quite like him.

On topic. I say neither.

Smartest thing I've heard all day.

And funniest. Somewhat-but-not-entirely-obscure-references for the win.

I have to agree.  I was a bit smitten with Alistair the first time I went through the game (he acts and sounds a lot like my boyfriend, was hard not to) but I got over it once I started playing the game more.  I prefer Zevran now for the most part, though it really does depend on the character than my personal preference.

Would dump them both on the side of the road for Gorim though.  Argh.

Even I was heartbroken over Gorim. Very well written, I must say.

More analysis of Alistair and Zevran.

Alistair gave my mage a rose, and said that she reminded him of it. My mage specializes in freezing, burning, and electrocuting masses of enemies, often human. She attempts to crush the life out of enemy mages in a magical cage or knocks them back 20 feet with a massive stone projectile. She may not be out there smashing heads with a maul, but there is nothing delicate about her--she can kill you with her brain. Yet Alistair perceives her as being innocent and in need of protection.

Zevran, on the other hand, realizes you could kill him any time you want, and while he does want to protect you, he wants to protect you by going into battle at your side so he can backstab your attackers.

Yes, so I prefer Zevran.

Zevran. Just . . . yes, Zevran. Gorim got married less than a year after we were exiled. Alistair . . . too frilly. My human noble isn't romancing him at ALL this play through. I've married him while friendly before, but he was still in love. I want to see if this is possible. Zevran will stay, though, even if Ali and I do marry. He is . . . true.

You think Alistair is implying you're weak just for giving you a rose? Um, aren't you overreacting a bit?

I fell hard for Alistair at first but he lacks depth for me. Zev won my heart with those amber eyes, those quick hands and that incredible massage ;)

I still have fun with Alistair because it's hard for me not to be nice but Zev's my man.

Isn't that what the rose symbolizes?  Delicacy, softness, beauty?

Unless it still has its thorns attached.  But who gives a woman one of those?  I would, but I'm crazy.

Zevran's got a rather sleazy vibe going. I mean come on, he hits on you when you first meet, as he's lying in the dirt with a sword at his neck after having just tried to kill you, no less. Geeze, dude... you don't think above the waist, do you? Plus there's no telling where he's put his... equipment, in the past.

Alistair is sweet, funny, charming in a flustered sort of way (partly because he's still a virgin, dawwww), but can still smack an ogre in the face with his shield and stab it in the throat on the way down. Plus he has a voice that could melt cast iron.  Hot.

Zevran is far more interesting. At first Alistair had the goofy sense of humor going for him, but that got old. Also, I have to disagree with whoever said Alistair was more physically attractive, I like my men on the more androgynous side (just personal preference). Also all his references to leather and chains...definitely a more interesting character in my book. I have yet to romance either, since this is my first playthrough, and was going through this exact same debate with a friend the other night, however I think I'm going for Zevran.

Plus, I want to specialize in assassin, dammit!

Well you ARE a squishy mage. You think you'll last long if Alistair wasn't playing his tank role?

Agree and agree.  And anyone who thinks a guy is sleazy just because he hits on you immediately hasn't known too many guys!  Zev at least backs down if you tell him not interested!

So, with multiple playthroughs I'm still hooked on Alistair. His personality and boyish charm get me every single time. I have recently started a Dalish elf female and plan to try the Zevran thing, but I do not know if I have enough self control not to fall for charming Al. We'll see...

Do you think he'd last long if I wasn't running crowd control for him?  At least Zevran seems to recognize the PC is powerful in her or his own right.

I checked the rose dialogue on YouTube, Alistair says that he saw the rose and picked it to save it from the darkspawn, and he's giving it to you because you remind him of the rose.

Sometimes women like to save other people from the darkspawn, you know.

I've been looking forward to Zevran so much; his accent is adorable, he's a suave, apathetic assassin, he's HOTT for a bunch of pixels, and I love men who have a bit of an ego (a bit, not a walking ego, mind you). I guess I was looking for something similar to Sky in JE, who has that type of exterior, but is a big old softie inside. I tend not to like obvious softies such as Alistair, but . . .

I decided to romance Alistair first, since I wanted to match a city elf who needs a fluffy character . . . and I love his romance now. I'm a convert. So if you like a lot of touching sweetness from a manly tank, that romance is for you.

By the time I picked up Zevran, Al and my city elf were too involved for a switch.

Make sure you play as a human noble for ahappy ending, though. My sister played through as a mage, and it wasn't a very happy ending, so I hear. (I'm not cone witht he game yet, playing 2 at once).

Yeah but he could have meant that you are as beautiful as a rose. You read too much into the rose thing. No where did he ever say you are weak. He even DEFERED leadership to you.

It'll be like saying when Zevran gives you the earring, he's thinking of you as nothing but a fashion accessory. You know, just an object.

Edit: I'm not arguing that you shouldn't choose Zevran. Just that you were wrong about the rose thing.

There's an option in the rose dialogue, to ask Alistair if he thinks that you are a delicate flower.  He emphatically says no, he's giving it to you because like the rose, you are beautiful in an ugly world, and you also have not had any of the good parts of being a Grey Warden, so that's his way of trying to make it up to you.  I really don't think Alistair would even *want* to romance a weak, delicate flower of a woman.

As far as the OP's question, I really like Zevran, and I think the romance with him was wonderful, but Alistair all the way, even with all his flaws, or because of them.  I wish I could have found a guy like Alistair IRL, honestly.  Posted Image
