I am having serious sound issues with Dragon Age (unmodded). The sound is crackling, off-time to the video and often repeats/changes volume/is inaudible.   I am also experiencing stuttering video anbd general game slowdown.  Oddly enough, these only started after I completed the origin quest and started the main campaign – prior to that I had no problem and the game ran excellently.  Setting lower graphics has no effect.
I do not have this any problems running other games (my only other game is Civilisation IV – heavily modded and system hungry, and it runs superbly).
I have  a new computer (specs below) and Windows 7 tells me that the video and sound cards are fully updated.  I am running high graphics (I would have thought I could run very-high quality with my machine, but the system configuration utility told me to set graphic quality to low, so I compriomised).

PC Desktop iXtreme X6620UK
Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q8300
6GB DDR2 Memory
1TB (!!!) HDD (Didn’t even know that such a measure existed)
Nvidea GeForce GT220 1024RAM (I would have thought that this was amazing but DA:O says its awful)
Windows 7.
Brand new (2 days)

Your new PC isn't a modern gaming PC going by its components. Your processor, although a low-end quad core, should be fine for DA:O. Likewise, the 6GB RAM is more than enough for any current game on Windows 7 (although I assume it is Windows 7 64-bit to be taking advantage of more than 4GB). I have been using Windows 7 for two months now and find it to be an excellent OS.

The video slowdowns are being caused by your pretty poor GPU, from a gaming point of view. For example, the Guru3D review of the GT220 clocked it at managing 19FPS in Fallout 3 at a resolution of 1280x1024. From a modern gaming standpoint, that result is underwhelming. The card is meant for gaming with some older games and accelerating HD video.

To make the best of the machine you have, check the following link to download the latest drivers for your system. support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php

Thankyou Lobsang1979. I presume by 'GPU' you mean the graphics card? I assumed it was very good because it was 1024RAM and the recommended settings for the game had said 512RAM and over, and had used an example of an older generation Nvidea card. It is so frustrating trying to work out which graphics card is better/worse; and whilst I believe you that my card is really bad, it doesn't address one issue:

The game worked perfectly during the origin quest. It only began to stutter during the main quest, and furthermore the stuttering is primarily sound-related, rather than graphics related. Surely the video card cannot be the only problem here?

Yes, sorry, by GPU I mean your graphics card. You are correct that it is getting more and more difficult for the average computer user to choose computer components. And, call me a cynic, but the hardware companies prefer it this way. Retailers such as PC World can then sell on borderline systems at marked up prices.

Regarding your sound stuttering, did you go to the link I provided and download the sound drivers for your motherboard. They are listed as Realtek HD Audio drivers. That would be the first action to try as it is the easiest to remedy. Do the same for your graphics card by grabbing the Nvidia drivers listed while you are at it.

If you install the latest drivers yet still encounter the same problems, the issue could be related to overheating of either your GPU or the computer Processor. One way of testing this is to download a program called HWMonitor, install it, then run it in the background while playing Dragon Age Origins. If the max temperature for your CPU is going above 60 degrees, or 85 degrees for your GPU, then your PC may have insufficient airflow to get rid of the excess heat generated by your components. Such overheating can cause skips and jumps in both audio and graphics, depending on the severity.

Finally, did your PC come pre-installed with any junk software from Packard Bell, or anti-virus from some other company? If so, one of these programs could be interfering with DA:O and systematically shutting them down to test this is advisable.

Try that, and good luck.

Fear not Jack, i'm having pretty much the same exact problem, except mine started almost right off the bat. It seems that the environment that my character is in seems to have some affect on whether i get the cracking audio, and accompanying problems. I'll bet that disabling the Sound Effects will fix the audio problems...but it really stinks to have to disable sound effects in such a great game. My system is as follows:

EVGA x58 3xsli MOBO

intel i7 920 (no overclocking)

6 GB DDR3 ram

ATI HD 4870 w/ 1GB DDR5 memory

Vista 64

Part of me wonders if it's a problem with the realtek HD Audio onboard sound cards. I've tried 3 different versions of the realtek drivers, including the newest one that was released a week or so ago, and the ones that shipped with the mobo, and none have fixed the problem for me. And it's really upsetting having these audio problems in a game that has so much dialogue

HOLY COW I FOUND A FIX! Turning OFF one of my cores in affinity stopped ALL the stuttering during playback of cutscenes with the sound not matching the video.

Start DA:O and then alt-tab out or you can use ctrl-shift-esc. Then right click the game .exe and select affinity. Turn off core CPU1 (and 2 and higher if you have 4core). But leave CPU0 alone. That will crash your system if you do that. Thats a bad thing.

Funny how they havent optimized this game for Dual core (or more) systems. Dang shame really.

I had the same problems with sound and dropping frame rates with my Dell XPS M1730 Windows XP. It took a while to figure out that reason for lagging is my Sigmatel audio card. I fixed it by setting Hardware acceleration in Advanced audio settings to Basic . And it worked!

For me i cant run the game with sound at all. If i try to run with sound enabled, it gets a black loading screen, then crashes back to desktop with an error message. Disable sound, everything is just sunny and happy, no flaws. I've tried using both generic audio drivers and the appropirate realtek ones with no luck, and changing audio devices to test, no luck.

1. Would getting a sound card fix this.

2. Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it, id love to hear a solution to this game.

3. Is there anything else i should investigate to find cause.

Cheers

1. Would getting a sound card fix this.

Probably, certain Realtek chips and driver releases can cause some difficulties. Have you tried the latest drivers from your mainboard manufacturers website?

3. Is there anything else i should investigate to find cause.

You could try with music only or effects only to narrow it down a bit, but I expect it would be hard getting a fix or workaround for something like that, even if you could narrow it down.

For more information on sound cards see this thread:

Ok, ive bougt a new Xonar DG sound card, windows downloaded updates for sound card, but have also tried original disk ones, neither works, im begining to think its my motherboard that is playing funny buggers. Ive tried running with just music off and everything, but only when all sound is gone does it actually function.

I didn't mention before but i have the steam version of the game. This issue seems very deep seated.

Well, I have played the game for several months with no problem. my system meets the basic requirements for the game and had no problem. after seveal months I returned to the game and to my surprise - NO SOUND - not even in the logo screens at start up. If I take sound acceleration to basic - I have sound. Tried updating the drivers - not working any different, and I don't have any other sound problems with any of the other games I run.
