Does playing as a Mage in DA2 do big difference?

Mages VS Templar is the focus of the game. As I played twice as Warrior and once as Thief... does being a Mage make the storyline more personal? Are there any significative differences? (Quests, dialogue lines).

I was thinkin' of doing a 4th playthrough as Mage... but as it's a long and sometimes boring job... you know... I'd better ask ;)

Nah, there's not really a big difference. A couple lines of dialog, and Carver survives instead of Bethany.

Also, a theif??? You mean a rogue, right?

Well the gameplay is a lot more fun as a mage and you get Carver instead of Bethany. I always preferred playing as a Rouge because I found Bethany to be more interesting,

I found it pretty difficult to deal with the level of story / gameplay segregation when I tried a mage run.

I did okay for awhile, but lost it when Cullen makes the remark about mages not being people like you and me...

@above: I actually like that scene better when you're a Mage. It just adds a certain element to it.

Anyway, it's not too different. You get a few extra dialogue options now and then. Basically, every time someone brought up Bethany, they mention something about you instead. More-or-less.

Well, I think Carver surviving makes the game pretty different. And it impacts on yor relationship with Fenris (ie, makes it harder to get Friendship with him early on).

Aside from that, and a few different dialogues, nothing really changes. A lot of people are pissed about that, but I don't think they're very reasonable about it. A lot of them seem to want the game to respond completely differently to a mage Hawke, and that was obviously never going to happen.

Mage is much more fun, especially if you want to have specific control over spells and ANOTHER HEAL!

If you don't like Anders, rolling mage and making a Spirit Healer could be an idea. Although the game becomes a little boring when you don't have a lot of DPS spells but Merrill's dps isn't too bad.
I personally prefer Carver to Bethany, I find Bethany to be particularly weak for a female character. If Beth were as strong as Carver I would like her more :).

Personally, I think it's worth trying both a playthrough with Bethany and a playthrough with Carver at least once. At least for Act 1. After the first Act, they pretty much disappear until the end.

NOPE. I've played through with a mage many times...11 specifically. Other than Keeping Carver and slightly altered dialogue...nothing really special about it. There aren't any new quests.

Surprisingly Anders only mentions it about...three times? Two of them rely on you doing his quests.
Even then in one he's blasting you for never having been in the Circle. :I
You can mention to outside people that you're a mage but...it's not like they turn you in or anything.

And please get as far as meeting Cullen and finishing the quest he gives you. That man's dialogue is hilarious.
Gameplay-wise I don't know...Healing whenever you want (well every 60 seconds) is nice...but I found out it draws aggro for some reason. That's not fun.

I would have preferred if Hawke didn't have to make their hand glow just to prove to people (ex. Feynriel) that they are a mage. In a city like Kirkwall, where the templars are the law and they make mages tranquil just for something to do, why would someone walk around in robes and carry a staff if they weren't a mage? It would also be nice if Sebastian wouldn't label all mages as maleficar and mention "this ridiculous mage rebellion" when standing right next to a mage Hawke.

Basically, the game progresses the same no matter what class Hawke is, aside from which sibling survives Lothering. The only real difference is how they play in combat. It would have been nice if mage Hawke had to watch out for templars like Bethany did, but no one seems to care.

Meredith mentions it in Act 3 and you and Fenris have one or two lines about he being in love with a mage :P

Yes, there is a difference. In addition to having Carver as a companion (with a story arc and personality completely different from Bethany's) and several dialogue changes, it also shifts how you consider the central conflict. As a rogue or warrior, Hawke is somewhat outside the mage/templar debate which drives DA2 forward. As a mage, they have a personal stake in it. Yes, Bethany is there as a morality pet for non mage Hawkes. But considering she can die at the end of Act 1, there is a significant part of the story in which Hawke is divested from the chief conflict.

Mage Hawkes would have been struggling to avoid the Circle for their entire lives. The debate is not just rhetoric, it's a matter of their own freedom to live their life as they see fit. When the conflict becomes more personal, I'd say that qualifies as a big difference.

I like to ****** Anders off by supporting the Circle as a mage.

Mainly a few lines of dialogue here and there. Might as well give it a try. Maybe it's your favorite class and you don't even know it!

No, I even tried doing a warrior playthrough where I let Bethany die in the deeproads, was completely anti mage and pro templar, thwarted and ****ed at Anders and Merril at every turn, did everything Meredith asked, and still at the end Meredith is like "rargh the champion must die!"

Er... yeah Nefia thats because regardless of class Meredith perceives you as a threat to her power thats why she wants you dead being a mage is just a good excuse for her

I played my first run through as a mage. People are mostly correct, there is not a big difference between it and other playthroughs.

Although you do get a couple more random options to use magic as a dialogue option (I know, right?). For instance, when dealing with the blood mage in the brothel, when she begins using blood magic to mind control you, your character can use a magic (a pentagram, if I'm not mistaken) option to break hold of her spell. Of course, in any playthrough, you break out somehow, but it is another option/outcome.

Mage in DA 2 = More ridiculous fireworks for everyone! :D I would honestly be surprised if the folks at EAware had had an enlightening moment like 'Hey guys...What if, y'know...Hawke is a mage him/herself?' *cicadas chirping* 'Right, uhh, I'll just add some useless lines here and there'.

I always take the Blood Mage spec and just headcanon it that MageHawke is mentally controlling everyone to forget he's a mage. Especially if you take it towards the end of the Deep Roads quest and make a deal with that demon.
