The big difference is the obvious one - You get Carver instead of Bethany.

Other than that, not really. There's just a few minor spots in dialogue that are mildly altered for Mage Hawke, all those moments that Bethany was throwing around her magic, Hawke does it instead.

No one really acknowledges you're a Mage until the Final Act, and even that is a single line of dialogue (Edit: That's a lie, Anders will mention it whenever he's yelling at you)... But yes - Carver instead of Bethany is quite a difference.

Aside from the game being easier (seriously, got to love how OP Mages are in this series. And no, I'm not complaining) and your surviving sibling changing, no. It really makes no big difference. From a Roleplay perspective it might make you feel "closer" to the Mage vs Templar conflict, as well as having a deeper connection to Malcolm Hawke (your father) but from a story/dialogue perspective little changes other then some of your companions look at you funny sometimes, for lack a better description.

Honestly it's one of the reasons I really deplore David and Mike's choice to go with a class system that dictates which sibling lives since it really has no baring on the overall narrative and the role your siblings play in it. Bethany could have *still* been alive alongside her Mage brother (or sister) and *still* have what happens to her (depending on choices) without effecting the story in almost anyway.

Sad part is I love playing as a Mage and yet I find Carver so deplorable and his part in the story even less impactful/meaningful then Bethany's that I'm forced to play as a Warrior so that I can have the preferred sibling since her role in events earns my sympathy far more and feels more tightly wound into the conflict.

So, long story short, it really comes down to the game being a bit more of a challenge (Warrior/Rogue) or not (Mage) but from a story standpoint, aside from Anders being even more Emo/Crazy and getting saddled with a boring and whiny sibling as opposed to an interesting sympathetic one, not so much.

I like it how you can go around telling everyone oyu are a mage, fling fireballs and use magic openly in the streets and no one cares.

Yeah, such a huge disconnect between gameplay and setting.

Actually Meredith mentions it when you first encounter her, but there are, of course other things going on at the time so it's a minor point at that moment.

Er... yeah Nefia thats because regardless of class Meredith perceives you as a threat to her power thats why she wants you dead being a mage is just a good excuse for her

It's stupid.

Worth playing as a mage at least once so you can keep Carver. The verbal **** slapping you can give him at points is superb :D

Mages VS Templar is the focus of the game. As I played twice as Warrior and once as Thief... does being a Mage make the storyline more personal? Are there any significative differences? (Quests, dialogue lines).

I was thinkin' of doing a 4th playthrough as Mage... but as it's a long and sometimes boring job... you know... I'd better ask ;)

Carver, other than that no, which is strange, because you sort of just hang with templars all the time, and they do not react to you being a mage at least 90% of the time.
