I've already done the math on this. Its pretty much imposisble to make Mass Effect a movie.
Why? The sould of Mass Effect is the choices you make and the characters that appear and speak with you.
In Mass Effect 1, You're going to alienate part of your audience on the Virmire Survival, let alone the LI or any other choice in the game. A movie also canonizes events from the game, something that should never happen in an RPG, at all.
Moving on to Mass Effect 2, You're never going to get the characters properly written. At all. Its impossible.
Lets say we have a two hour film for Mass Effect 2. We'll set aside 30 mins for the Lazerus Project and Suicide Mission. That leaves us an hour and 30 mins or 90 mins to introduce and characterize 15 characters. Doing the math, we have 7.5 mins to do so. Obviously, that's not enough time at all.
So, Hey, Two part movies are popular now days, right? Lets bump ME2 up to being a four hour movie. We have 4 hours (240 mins) instead of 2 hours (120 mins). We'll subtract 45 mins for the Suicide Mission and Project Lazerus. Doing the math for our 15 characters, we end up with about 16 mins to introduce and develop each of them. Its not possible to do what needs to be done in 16 mins.
On top of that, You have the issues of choice, once again. You're going to alienate people on their choices and LI and ete.
Moving on to Mass Effect 3, You run into the issues of ME3's plot. Following the game to a T is not a good idea because of the mess the plot actually is and you're going to reopen old wounds with the endings, espicially if they go with Synthesis or something.
But, on the other hand, writing a new version of the ME3 plot could be....worse.
Over all, Its just simply a bad idea in all ways.
While you're correct in your evaluation of what the film's choices would do to alienate certain Mass Effect fans, you're not particulary accounting for the much, much (can't emphasize this enough) bigger movie audience that a potential film would target.
Moviegoers that haven't played the games are not going to care because the film would be their initial experience of the Mass Effect universe. They would be choosing to enjoy it as a movie and not a choice-driven game where outcomes differ from one player to another.
You only have to look at the actual size of the ME fanbase to realize how little of an impact (no matter how passionate) would have on the film's success. To date, Mass Effect 3 has sold roughly 2.4 million copies. And even if every single one of those consumers purchased a ticket for the ME movie, it would still account for a small percentage of what would be an expected box office gross for a high-budget sci-fi actioner.
When it comes to writing each installment, there's no reason for it follow each game mission by mission with every single character included. There's simply not enough time to do so. I would be fully prepared for some characters -- the ones that we as fans of the game series love -- to be cut entirely in order to create a tighter film narrative. Mass Effect 2 would most likely see the biggest hit considering the squad size.
Films, just like the Mass Effect games, are made to make money and to enterain. If Legendary Pictures thinks the Mass Effect property can do just that, and if BioWare feels their creation's core elements and themes will stay intact, I see no reason for it not to happen.
Shepard's choices in the film do not have to be seen as the canon choices to fans of the games. It's just another interpretation of Shepard's journey. I have fears just like anyone else does considering the past history of video game adaptations. But any ME fan that says they don't want to see Shepard and co. kicking Reaper *** on the big screen is someone that I don't believe is being totally honest with themselves. It would still be Mass Effect, not a completely different property just because narrative choice is being taken away.
The film's success would do nothing but good for the franchise, meaning more games and more ME all around.

Why not just have Yvonne Strahovski play Miranda? She already provides her voice and face model.
That wouldn't make any sense, though.
I have Shepard being played by Channing Tatum. Just a gut feeling. If The Illusive Man is ever included, I would LOVE for Michael Douglas to play him. I have actually always wanted him to be TIM, but I believe Mr. Douglas is in poor health, iirc. If not, I guess Martin Sheen could reprise his role.

Very well said. I also like how many people will watch others play the game on youtube where they have no control on the decisions made anyway. Really if you care so much about how this game is about choice you would take the time to make them yourself.

For those who didn't like Ellen as Ashley, is it more likely she would fit the role of Gillian Grayson better? I picture Jennifer Lawrence as Gillian but Ellen would be a good stand in.

I could come up with a dozen plot ideas that do not involve even touching the main trilogy, yet they are so content on butchering the entire trilogy by making a 'canon' film?
Maybe it doesn't have to be "canon", just more of an interpretation for movie-goers. That might not make much sense but its the best i can give.

Paul Walker plays Paul Walker. I don't most people even know his character names when he's on screen. If he was cast as Shepard everyone would be thinking when is he gonna drag race Vin Diesel? Good guy but too much biased going against him.

Now I've been thinking about this for some time, on who I think should lead. In order for this project to be successful, I call upon Christopher Nolan to direct and JJ Abrams to produce.
Christopher Nolans marketing talent and storytelling grandeur has been proved time and time again with Batman, Inception, and Momento. By mixing his style from previous films whilst mixing the pot with this and sci-fi elements.
JJ Abrams as producer because of the intimidatingly stylish Bad Robot Productions, from films such as Star Trek and Cloverfield (the first film to actually make me scream out loud, like a schoolgirl, in the theater), while extracting his visual expertise from star trek with the help of Industrial Light and Magic Studios.
Cast should be easy:
Ellen Page as Ashley Williams
Karl Urban as Kaidan Alenko
Idris Elba as David Anderson
Seth Green as Joker (Robert Downey Jr. if he backs out)
All voice actors to reprise roles in CGI Motion Capture
I'm not deciding yet who I think should play Shepard. That is up to all of you.
What do you guys think?
I would hate to see a Mass effect movie, there's just far too many ways to butcher it...
Also, I hated all of your casting choices, excluding Seth Green as joker.
Ellen Page as Ashley? Are you insane? Tell me you're joking, that little shrimp of a girl playing a hard as nails woman like Ashley? Not to mention the size difference... And mentioning that ashley is hispanic or biracial would probably just make her an even worse choice than she already is...
Karl Urban...eh, I can't see him as Kaiden, Urban always looks so angry and serious, whereas Kaiden just seems like a really down to earth guy and has a maturity that Urban himself definitely lacks(from what I've seen of him).
Idris Elba looks nothing like Anderson, he's an awesome actor, but he's just too young and big to play Anderson.
At Robert Downey Jr as Joker, he has the attitude down pat, but he doesn't look the part at all, Joker has a slightly nerdy overtone as well, Seth Green is fine as him.
And just let me say again, no Ellen Page.
Ever.

This ^, I saw him in one role with Vera Farmiga that actually looked semi-serious in which his acting was passable, but he'd need a lot more experience before he could play Shep.
Looks don't matter as Shep could be played by literally anyone of either gender or any color, but I'm betting they'll go with default Shepard, so in that case, I agree with whoever said Matthew Fox, he looks the part, but so does Walker, but at least the former isn't known for just being a pretty-boy.

Brilliant for Kaiden. I love Karl Urban, he's one of my favourite actors of all time. (He could also pull of Shepard, IMO)
Miranda: Yvonne Stahovski (duh)
Dr Chakwas: So would love to see Helen Mirren.
Admiral Hacket: Lance henrickson (another duh)
Zaeed: PH Moriarty (from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Frank Herbert's Dune)
FemShep: This is going to cause some eye-rolling, but I'd say Milla Jovovich
Broshep: Chris Hemsworth
TIM: Martin Sheen (duh)
EDI: Tricia Helfer (again...)
Liara: Carrie Mulligan
Tali: Ellen Page
Conrad Verner: Bradley Cooper or Nathan Fillion (obviously cameo, but it'd be hysterical!)
James Vega: UFC fighters Chael Sonnen or Frank Mir.
Anderson: Keith David (if it ain't broke...)
Samara: Sigourney Weaver
Of course there's more, but i'm tired and can't think of any.
