Why are the graphics in DA2 worse than DA:O?

I'm sorry but I personally think that the characters in DA:O were much more attractive than the characters in DA2. This can't be just me. Is there anyone else who sees this and why are they more ugly?

(If you want an example, look at Alistair and Zevran from DA:O to DA2. *shudders*

DA2 uses a more stylised art direction. They both have their ups and downs in my opinion, but not converting old characters really carefully can make them look really weird in the new style.

Zevran also has to endure the change to the new elf body, which probably doesn't help him.

Well, Alistair is older and more haggard; events have robbed his visage of the youthful sparkle and rosiness he had in Origins, whether through the pressures of ruling Ferelden, leading the Grey Wardens or drunkenness. :o

On the other hand, I think Merrill and Isabella look much more attractive, likewise with Cullen. Leliana looks equally good in both games, I feel.

I think the environmental art is better in DA:2 in many areas though, particularly around Kirkwall. Hightown is breathtaking and scenic; Lowtown feels dingy and hardscrabble, but alive; Darktown like it should, a nasty sewer that's home to bottom-dwellers.

Also, Hawke is hot and smexy. No bias.

I thought overall the graphics were MUCH better in DAII. I didn't like the new darkspawn, I'm not fond of the new elves, and poor Alistair just looked awful. But that was all down to the artists - the actual graphics aren't to blame.

Plus, some old friends (like Cullen) were a definite improvement!

Sure, most of the main characters looked fine or even great, but why did the background, silent, filler NPCs look like this:

Low-res elf sees what they did there... or he would if he didn't have cataracts in his eyes.

I think DA2 graphics are more and more better than DAO, even if the game itself isn't.
I like that red/black/gold combination, really fits good with the DA Universe. Hope they make something similar with DA3... maybe with black and gold menus.

I think DA2 has a more inspired art style and I liked being able to download a high-res texture patch (although mods could do the same in DA:O).

I prefer the way Origins looks.  They tried to make DA2 look too much like ME.

Origins' graphics have a more dark, serious tone to them. Could they be improved? Of course, what is immune to improvment? If the teeth and eyes were done a bit better they would be remarkable.

DA2's graphics look like something out of a saturday morning cartoon line-up.

There we have it. The problem with any graphics is that it is subjective. Some of the posters like the graphics and other do not. So Bioware will make the decision and we can decide with our wallets, purses or pocketbooks to support it or not.

We're talking about art style aren't we? I disliked the direction they took it in. It was far too cartoonish, clean and smooth, especially in a game which was supposed to be dark. Origins' art style wasn't perfect, but it did fit the tone of the game much better and was better suited to the setting.

I was just playing DAO: Awakening this past week, and I was struck by how much more I preferred the old art style. While some people thought of it as "generic", I prefer to think of it as "classic".

DA:O graphics have terrible coding, and that's one of the biggest problems I had with Origins, you keep playing and suddenly your computer has trouble keeping up because Origins doesn't refresh it's cached files in your RAM! I hate that part of Origins. And I love DA2 cause it's smarter :D.

Because Bioware decided to change to a horrible art style for DA2. Yes I know some people liked it, but OP you are not alone in thing it's ugly.

The artstyle was awful, too comic-y, something someone who's never heard of fantasy wouldn't be too confused with.

The characters were bland and unrealistic (no matter what artstyle they went for ), the environment was awfully lacking....

When you look at the other recent AAA RPGs (TW2, Skyrim, DkS, even DA:O), no matter what the artstyle was, there was so much detail in the design, it was astonishing.

DA2 is just... It feels like when I was child and I drew my own comics... And then I'd draw a dude and a horse and whatever... but couldn't be arsed with the background so I'd just doodle something there roughly.
That's what DA2 environment looks like.
Lazy,

It is a different art style. I personally prefer the DA:O style, more western, more gritty, more realistic. Tons more details in the environments with all the clutter and such. You can tell someone put some work into those instead of the cut/paste jobs done with DA2.

DA2 actually has superior graphics, it's the art style (note: graphics =/= aesthetics) that makes it look bad.

Point.

I think the directive of "appealing to a larger audience" played a hand in it. Dragon Age focused on an audience. The second Dragon Age tried to appeal to people that were not part of that audience, alienating what seems to be a significant portion of them. Whether they gained enough new loyal players to offset the ones that are disappointed is unknown to me.

EDIT: Loyalty is an important point.

The graphics are better, over all. (Excluding eye-less, face-less elven bystanders. The poor buggers.)

The art style is horrific though, and gives the environment a comical feel, while characters wander around with faces crafted roughly from Play-Dough.... Player Characters included.

The landscapes were poorly rendered, a number of them looking like painted card-board backgrounds from a school play or poorly funded B-Movie. The city was lacking in depth and detail, and that caused everything to feel fairly immature and unrealistic.

Disclaimer: Normally i would be able to overlook something so far removed from realism, i mean it's a computer game i'm not expecting full realistic bull, but the problem is this city is the only thing we see for the entirety of the game. It should have felt real, it should've felt alive, it should've been more than background, it should have been a living breathing thing, bustling with life. As it stands the city of Kirkwall has little to no impact on players who are seeing it for the first time and eventually it fades in to nothing but background - A poorly made set for an overly dramatic play.

The interiors were somewhat better, like Viscount's Keep and the Chantry, but the Hanged Man suffered the same issues at the exterior of the city - A lack of depth and realism that made it feel like nothing but background, completely unimpressive and easily ignored. Not a living breathing tavern full of wenches and ale and dodgy gambling, as it should of been. As a result it lacked a great deal of impact and just faded away after a few visits.

The characters are the worst though... Really, the Play-Dough cheeks and jaw lines just creep me out, and irritate me at the same time. No one has any real structure to their face and it's just kind of a.... A blob.... Just a blob with a nose.

Urgh.

But, uhm...... Yeah, sorry... Uh... It's the art style that did most of the damage - not the graphics.
