Lol people are saying skyrim appeals to the unwashed masses?
Mass Effect 3: Auto dialog: action mode: Multiplayer

Autodialogue is not optional, it's in every god damn conversation.
you can't argue it buddy, there is 10x more auto dialog in 3, then in the other 2 games

To answer the question though, Skyrim came out winning all sorts of GOTY awards, everyone was giving it 10s, etc. Mass Effect already isn't the biggest seller out there, and then I'm guessing it took a big hit by word of mouth. Really they tried to appeal to too many people: dumbed down the RPG and scared off a lot of people into that, but never really attracted that COD crowd.
An alternative theory is that they're making a killing through multiplayer so are trying to get more players by selling the game cheaper so they'll make more in the long run.

Not only that, but a lot of the MP community has jumped ship because of a combination of problems including repetitiveness, random unlocks, and game breaking glitches, and they want players to keep playing and paying for more packs, hence the price drops.
As a side note, I find it funny that people are never content with professional ratings. If they don't like the game and it gets high scores the publishers/developers paid the critics off and if it didn't get a high enough score the critics are idiots with no taste in games.

I just did some digging, I found out that ME2 had almost the exact same pattern in terms of price drops over the first six months after release. Skyrim really is an anomaly when it comes to its ability to stay relatively high priced.
Skyrim is nothing compared to Mario Kart DS which is still full priced after 7 years.

The whole ending fiasco was a PR nightmare. Even with the Extended Cut DLC BioWare can't live it down, because A) they had to give in to fans and admit their "mistakes" andmany people still complain about the ending.

I get the repetitivness in MP but not the random unlocks. Didn't notice those.
Also if you read magazines like Game Informer, half the mail they get is criticizing their ratings for certain games.

Scifi it seems, is harder to get right(at least beyond niche specially in videogames) more so then fantasy. Seems most of the top writers/directors at least story wise are less inconsistent.
Also with fantasy, you dont have to worry about a writer constantly going from high fantasy to low fantasy. Where as with scifi you always have to hope that the writers dont treat the setting like it is skitzo not knowing what kind of scifi it is(however this normally happens).
Star Craft 2 is still at full price

MW2 is still near full price in store.
Activision know they have the market cornered when it comes to Modern Warfare. If you want to play it and play with your friends, then they can charge you full price. Every release, they get millions of people preordering and buying on or soon after release. They charge that because they can. They charge it because the consumers will pay it.
Pricing often says very little about the quality of the game. It can say something about the quality of the publisher and the quality of the audience.
