I have been playing since release (on and off) and i can count on my fingers how many times i have been in a lobby with mics. This sucks because in a game like this communication is key well at least for me it is.

I've been in 5 matches today in which people used their mics. It's dependant on who you play with, and sometimes people may have a headset but not a mic.

They could also be in a party.

I've got a mic, but to be honest, most times it's not really needed. If something awesome happens or something terrible is coming I'll talk, but during the course of a normal PUG it's not necessary.

Most 12 y/o's break that cheap 360 mic within a week of getting their 360. Since I'm pretty sure that is a majority of the XBL community = no mics.

Mine is busted & I honestly cannot justify getting a new 1 as I basically only play this game on Xbox live. I *could* use a mic for talking to people while I am skyrimming, but... it is not really that crucial

I always have my headset plugged in, but nobody ever speaks, so I don't.
I'd feel awkward trying to start up a conversation with the other people in the lobby.

I often don't say anything because I don't like people. Maybe that's a big part of it?

"OMFG A DRAGON!"

Odd thing to hear when playing a different game.

I never really saw a need to get one. Until I joined a community and was required to have one.

I use a mic, but only speak during later waves, when the boss enemies appear and then just to warn the team.

I played mp @ 1 - 2am last night on xbox360. The kids had mics and had a brit accent. I suck at mp... but played better than any of 'em. Just felt surreal.

I got my 2 promotions!

I think age plays into it somewhat

I'm in my 30's. The thought of chatting up some stranger on a mic is odd to me. As is the notion that its possible to have a conversation - or maintain a relationship with someone - via text message, or that I should advertise personal details about my life on Facebook

I'm sure many people in my generation use mics (and text frequently, and use Facebook); I suspect, however, that as those of us in our mid to late thirties make up a good number of gamers (last I heard, we are the largest single demographic of buyers... mostly because we have money), that we're less likely to use mics than, say, teenagers or twenty-somethings

The main reason I don't is a mic is because random guys are usually like, "oh a lady!" I usually only plug my mic in for pug platinum matches or I'm with friends. One guy in a public match told me he was pretending I was in a sexy cheerleader outfit, (I am the anti-cheerleader btw). Guys seriously this is xbox live not a dating website.

I usally avoid mic connection on 360. Mainly cuz, in my time on live, I often deal with rude jerks who play music over the mic. I like to listen to music, but if you ask me to turn it down, I'll do it. On 360, you can just join a solo party. But, id like an in match option to mute people. I noticed that, at least on 360, many Gold/Platinum players insist on mic connection. But, this also happened around the time before the missile glitch was patched. Go figure.

I see no reason why I should talk, I prefer silence, but that's just me.

Children in my house have a tendency to sleep at night, which is when I finally have an opportunity to play. Don't worry. If I do something dumb, I have medigel!

Considering some of the idiotic and inane drivel I've heard spouted in random games I'm thankful that more don't have mics. I have to deal with idiots all day long at work, I really don't want to have to listen to them while I'm relaxing at home in the evenings.

Want to tell me there's a brute coming up behind me? I'm good, key your mic and let me know. Want me to listen to your trailer trash music or want to tell me that your strategy is better than mine? Go pound sand.

LadyNemesis, one thing I've noticed about gaming, is that most males who play video games react like that. Its typical. My friend at college said she dealt with the same thing while playing WoW in the days when WoW was actually difficult. Its typical, at least with a girl. When I play Mass Effect 3 with my friend's wife, it is a little bit different. For example, we don't make a big deal when she uses a rocket on an Atlas on Bronze. The problem with males in online games is that they need to be a little more mature, and learn how to deal with a woman.

Ha! Same here. :P

Most of what I hear on XBL is stupid and crude, racist or misogynistic. :crying:

Players that have in-game awareness are by far better than a team with mics. I'll take a team with no mics and an understanding of the game and it's mechanics over a team of mic users who constantly brag and don't use consumables. Mics are not needed. Situational awareness is a key component to success.

I just don't. If I'm not with Team AreleX members having a laugh or discussing strategy then I prefer listening to music then to be greeted with possible dicks...

This. Some players are extremely picky. In my time in L4D2, I've been kicked, simply for not having a mic. At the time, I didn't have my headset, because I was near Austin and not Houston, and I left my mic at home. I had just bought L4D2, and wanted to play Versus mode. They kicked me, and I assume it was simply because I didn't have a mic. I understand, in Versus/Scavenge mode, communication is vital. But, me and another friend of mine can collect all the cans on that Mall Atrium map every time, as long as we have the two of us, and the two of us have mics. Good, mature players don't kick someone simply because they don't have a mic. I see how they play, then decide if I want to kick him. Simple right?

In truth, I'm always in a party when I play ME3.

This.

I pop into game chat at the start of a match, say hello, etc.

But when I hear Goon #1 shouting at someone else in the background, Goon #2 having absurdly loud music, and Goon #3 in a wind tunnel--I go back into Party chat and talk with friends playing other games.
