Fae, why are you making it seem like I'm being ignorant? I completely understand that all cultures have a dark side, even my own ethnically European (French and Scottish, to be exact). There's no need for you to get so defensive. Lots of things from traditional Europe would not fly these days. And honestly, the elves in DA aren't exactly saints you seem to be making them out to be either.

And yet European traditions, religions, practices and laws are what set the standard for the modern world.

I know the elves aren't saints, but they deserve better than what they have and they shouldn't have every attempt at cultural restoration and social reform squashed every time someone decides things are just fine the way they are.

She's determined to revive the dying aspects of her culture, but she's doing to by using a power that's very dangerous, and using a mirror that's been tainted not just by dark magic, but by causing the deaths of two people she grew up with.

The taint in the mirror could be removed, and the mirror itself cleansed. How many times do I have to say it?

Also, didn't the Keeper at one point say that the demon Merrill was consorting with was going to use the Mirror as a portal into their world, and possess Merrill? If that's true, then the Mirror is dangerous.

We don't know if that was true or not. Marethari was already possessed when she said it, and she could have already made up her mind about it before even talking to the demon, lying to make herself feel better about her decision, been tricked into believing it by the demon so she would willingly let it possess her, etc.

The demon certainly didn't need to use the mirror as a portal into our world since it could already pass over into a host when it took over Marethari. If it really wanted to take over Merrill, it could have done so at any time, not waited for her to complete the mirror for several years.

But I don't hate Merrill. I completely understand where she is coming from. I just disagree with the mean in which she is going to to obtain it. It's common sence in the DA world that demons are not to be trusted with, under any circumstance.

And yet the Warden can make a deal with a demon in DA:O without any consequences to themselves. Merrill knows the demon is dangerous and handles it accordingly. As she says to Anders: "There's no such thing as a good spirit. There never was. All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I'm sorry that you didn't."

It's sad that whatever you do with Merrill's segment, if ends with a huge amount of rivalry points if you choose to be diplomatic. And I was trying to be friends with her during my first playthrough. It was the only way I could prevent having to kill her entire tribe. It's kinda ironic now that I think about it. With Merrill, the less bloodless path is the rivalry.

I don't think it's diplomacy so much as confirming their suspicions.

Her entire tribe accused her of murdering their Keeper before even learning what happened and was ready to murder her in cold blood before Hawke steps forward. The way Hawke placates the tribe is by confirming their accusation of Merrill killing their Keeper and telling them that s/he'll keep her from killing anyone else, so of course she would be upset.

Notice too that that explaining what happened made them attack while confirming their suspicions made them stand down. I would think that telling them Merrill is innocent would make them listen, while telling them they're right that Merrill and/or Hawke killed their Keeper would make them attack, yet BioWare pulled a fast one on us. That doesn't mean the characters know it at the time.

Merrill couldn't have known what was going to happen next. You're using meta-gaming knowledge to judge in-game character decisions. I'm sure Merrill didn't want Hawke to rile her entire tribe up so she could kill them, but I think she wanted her closest friend to stand up for her. While we know that throwing her to the wolves is the only way to keep from having to kill the tribe (though I personally have little pity since they demonized, antagonized and ostracized Merrill for years, culminating in judging her to be guilty-until-proven-innocent and trying to play judge, jury and executioners), but unless your in-game Hawke is a prophet who could see into the future, I don't buy that s/he said it specifically to prevent this specific outcome.

Unless your Hawke truly believed Merrill was responsible for Marethari's death. To which I say the woman went behind Merrill's back, sabotaged her carefully laid out plans and allowed the demon possess her of her own free will. Marethari also could have handled the demon situation in a number of ways, but she chose to take it on by herself and let it possess her by herself. She's just as, if not more responsible for her fate.

Anyway, Fae, I think we should probably stop discussing this soon and end on a friendly note. You honestly seem to be taking what I'm trying to say the wrong way. And while I do admire your passion, and think it's great that you're so willing to stand up for what you believe in, you seem to be getting kinda hostile. All I was trying to do was have a friendly debate. Let's just agree to disagree and make peace. Please?

If you still disagree, it's your prerogative, but I've also said my piece.

I'm new to the forums, so forgive me if I muss things up at first. I had a love/hate relationship with the love affairs of DA2. I loved how it worked in Origins. The time you could put into it, the sex scenes were fun, it was very well managed. I was pretty disappointed that the most we got in Awakening was a letter. I was very frustrated with the way LI worked in DA2. I felt like it was sort of pushed aside as far as dynamics go. I liked the individual quests for characters. But it did not feel substantial. That being said, I felt like there was quite a bit more emotion put into the few bits we got in DA2. I only ever romanced Fenris, but the story of Hawke/Fenris, what little we got, was, imo, emotionally charged. I just wish there could have been mooooooooooooooore. It was very frustrating not being able to initiate any kind of conversation with your LI. So I am hoping for Inquisition they go back to their romance Origins, pun intended.

Oh, come on, MotA has the best dialogue for a rescue LI!

...Tallis: Not to come between you two or anything, but you didn't actually rescue us.
Tallis: I did.
....

And Anders / Hawke dialogue when he is kidnapped is cute ^^. I killed Carver on the Deep Roads just to hear it ;) She says she will never let this happen again and he says she is looking lovelier than ever

This is precisely why I dislike Felicia Day, her character is the biggest Mary Sue ever forced into a canon storyline. Making your character to be cool, witty, beautiful and brave is a standard recipe for creating a Mary Sue, Felicia Day is a horrible writer and Tallis should be killed off immediately.

Anyway, the romances in DA2 were fine. I actually didn't think Alistair was all that great, he was just easy to romance is all. Alistair is like the default romance if you play a female, as Morrigan is default if you play a male character.

I hated how one sided the relationships seemed. I understand the companions having their own lives and feelings on the relationship. I understand them not wanting to line up for sex with the main character like in DAO. I like that you can ruin one relationship by being in another. But I need more romance! More dialogue and scenes. Allow me to have some control over how the romance progress. Let me kiss my LI in public to get a reaction from the group and the LI. Let me or my LI initiate...private time more. I romanced Fenris and that three year gap of him not talking about the relationship, leaving Hawke etc was odd. My Hawke was a very straight forward, sarcastic mostly yet an aggressive personality type when needed. It's hard to believe that he would let Fenris go three whole years without talking about the relationship and confirming whether or not they were still on track.

Yeah the choices were meh. As a male I was pretty disappointed. Merrill annoyed me to no end, with her hum-dee-dum, air head innocent crap. And Isabela was alright I guess. Atleast she acted above the age of 12. Of course the scene with Zevran made me alittle mad, I mean RIGHT in front of me? Damn...

My Hawke was the same way actually as yours Hazegurl. The whole supposedly 10 year relationship the game had, felt so empty, and added absolutely no substance for it being a feaking decade. I mean the final battle was the only time I really remember anything romantic happening.

It takes several playthroughs to get all the dialogs and that is a pain if you don't enjoy replaying the game. I do so I didn't mind. But ya, with only one playthrough you barely see the depth of the romance dialogs.

I liked both games' romances along with Mass Effect's, but I think the romance was weaker, but deeper, in certain parts than DA:O. It was traded off a lot. There's more romantic discussion in romantic scenes by the characters, offset by the general lack of flirtatious dialogue with your romanced character elsewhere. I liked the Merrill relationship. She seemed to care about Hawke, and Hawke is really the only person to accept her. But DA:O's romances were far better, I thought.

I hope in DA3 we get more interaction with romanced companions, more talk of the future, generally more interaction. Romanced characters shouldn't just be a flagged entity that you occasionally have a scene with, they should take a much more prominent role.

It seems you get a lot of the recycled romance options however between DA:O and DA2, there's a little less personality variety.

Alistair and Merrill: well-meaning and naive, cutesy in their romance dialogue.
Zevran and Isabella: sex everything that moves.
Leliana and Anders: super idealistic but loyal and caring.

Then you get someone like Fenris who's got a cool friend personality but is overall just your generic wronged badass-on-revenge guy. The romances just don't feel very unique. Bioware is good at romance, but it always seems like they delve into the same pool of archetypes. Sitting inside a box is comfy, but going out of it would be nice.

PS: Bioware, please do not pull more ME3 BS in Dragon Age III. I don't want my character to have to sacrifice him/herself to kill a ghost child of the Archdemons in order to make Templars and Mages live in peace only to have it be suicidal and my character only survive if I gain enough Dragon Points to fight the final battle after giving my companion armors full upgrades to prevent their deaths. I want a happy ending if we can work for it and deserve it, dammit.
