Fae, why are you making it seem like I'm being ignorant? I completely understand that all cultures have a dark side, even my own ethnically European (French and Scottish, to be exact). There's no need for you to get so defensive. Lots of things from traditional Europe would not fly these days. And honestly, the elves in DA aren't exactly saints you seem to be making them out to be either.
And yet European traditions, religions, practices and laws are what set the standard for the modern world.
I know the elves aren't saints, but they deserve better than what they have and they shouldn't have every attempt at cultural restoration and social reform squashed every time someone decides things are just fine the way they are.
She's determined to revive the dying aspects of her culture, but she's doing to by using a power that's very dangerous, and using a mirror that's been tainted not just by dark magic, but by causing the deaths of two people she grew up with.
The taint in the mirror could be removed, and the mirror itself cleansed. How many times do I have to say it?
Also, didn't the Keeper at one point say that the demon Merrill was consorting with was going to use the Mirror as a portal into their world, and possess Merrill? If that's true, then the Mirror is dangerous.
We don't know if that was true or not. Marethari was already possessed when she said it, and she could have already made up her mind about it before even talking to the demon, lying to make herself feel better about her decision, been tricked into believing it by the demon so she would willingly let it possess her, etc.
The demon certainly didn't need to use the mirror as a portal into our world since it could already pass over into a host when it took over Marethari. If it really wanted to take over Merrill, it could have done so at any time, not waited for her to complete the mirror for several years.
But I don't hate Merrill. I completely understand where she is coming from. I just disagree with the mean in which she is going to to obtain it. It's common sence in the DA world that demons are not to be trusted with, under any circumstance.
And yet the Warden can make a deal with a demon in DA:O without any consequences to themselves. Merrill knows the demon is dangerous and handles it accordingly. As she says to Anders: "There's no such thing as a good spirit. There never was. All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I'm sorry that you didn't."
It's sad that whatever you do with Merrill's segment, if ends with a huge amount of rivalry points if you choose to be diplomatic. And I was trying to be friends with her during my first playthrough. It was the only way I could prevent having to kill her entire tribe. It's kinda ironic now that I think about it. With Merrill, the less bloodless path is the rivalry.
I don't think it's diplomacy so much as confirming their suspicions.
Her entire tribe accused her of murdering their Keeper before even learning what happened and was ready to murder her in cold blood before Hawke steps forward. The way Hawke placates the tribe is by confirming their accusation of Merrill killing their Keeper and telling them that s/he'll keep her from killing anyone else, so of course she would be upset.
Notice too that that explaining what happened made them attack while confirming their suspicions made them stand down. I would think that telling them Merrill is innocent would make them listen, while telling them they're right that Merrill and/or Hawke killed their Keeper would make them attack, yet BioWare pulled a fast one on us. That doesn't mean the characters know it at the time.
Merrill couldn't have known what was going to happen next. You're using meta-gaming knowledge to judge in-game character decisions. I'm sure Merrill didn't want Hawke to rile her entire tribe up so she could kill them, but I think she wanted her closest friend to stand up for her. While we know that throwing her to the wolves is the only way to keep from having to kill the tribe (though I personally have little pity since they demonized, antagonized and ostracized Merrill for years, culminating in judging her to be guilty-until-proven-innocent and trying to play judge, jury and executioners), but unless your in-game Hawke is a prophet who could see into the future, I don't buy that s/he said it specifically to prevent this specific outcome.
Unless your Hawke truly believed Merrill was responsible for Marethari's death. To which I say the woman went behind Merrill's back, sabotaged her carefully laid out plans and allowed the demon possess her of her own free will. Marethari also could have handled the demon situation in a number of ways, but she chose to take it on by herself and let it possess her by herself. She's just as, if not more responsible for her fate.
Anyway, Fae, I think we should probably stop discussing this soon and end on a friendly note. You honestly seem to be taking what I'm trying to say the wrong way. And while I do admire your passion, and think it's great that you're so willing to stand up for what you believe in, you seem to be getting kinda hostile. All I was trying to do was have a friendly debate. Let's just agree to disagree and make peace. Please?
If you still disagree, it's your prerogative, but I've also said my piece.
