Dual classed characters

I have a character who is a fighter (great stats, rolled 99 naturally!) and I was thinking of making him a Mage after 4th (maybe 5th level fighter) but I have one or two questions for you good people on this site.
When I change to a mage I presume I have to use a puny sling instead of the composite bow I am using now but when do i get the ability to use that bow back? Is it at the equal level of the fighter class I was or one better? Also, when I transfer this character over to BG2 can I still pick as many weapon proficiencly slots as I like (i.e. like a fighter) or not?
One more question: as a fighter with 19 Con (as I plan to get after visiting the caves guarded by Sil and the sireens and then two flesh golems I would get +5 hit points per level, do I still get that as a mage or will it revert back to +2? One other thing I've just thought of: if I dual class to Mage at level 4 Fighter with 18 Con (i.e. 56 hit points) and then get the Con +1 book and go to 19 Con do I (as would normally happen if I'd stayed a Fighter) move up to 60 hit points, or not?
Sorry for the rambling essay - grateful for any answers :innocent:

If you are thinking of importing to BG2, I implore you to wait before dualclassing. Good BG2 levels for dualclassing are 7 (for impatient guys), level 9 and level 13 (for hardcore dualclassers).Little Grov wrote...

4 levels of fighter just don't amount to much, You don't get many HP out of it and your attacks per round are pitiful too. Your THAC0 can be mended with spells, but it won't be impressive either.
One better. Level 4 fighter/level 5 mage.Is it at the equal level of the fighter class I was or one better?
I have actually never tried importing a dualclass to Baldur's Gate 2. You should be be able to relocate all your proficiency points. I have no idea what's going to happen if your first class is still inactive at this point though. Also, when I transfer this character over to BG2 can I still pick as many weapon proficiencly slots as I like (i.e. like a fighter) or not?
The mage will only get 2 extra HP per level. You will not lose your fighter's HP though. One more question: as a fighter with 19 Con (as I plan to get after visiting the caves guarded by Sil and the sireens and then two flesh golems I would get +5 hit points per level, do I still get that as a mage or will it revert back to +2?
Constitution bonuses work retroactively. Otherwise there would be no point for you to be able to improve your constitution at the end of Baldur's Gate 2 (or in the middle of Throne of Bhaal).

Only for values exceeding 19.ncknck wrote...
High constitution provides regeneration
Only for people of lower than average height.and save bonuses,
It is 1 per fighter level. If OP indeed dualclasses at level 4, it's really not worth much.As for healtrh 1 point of extra constitution above 18 is only 5 health or less, not worth the trouble.

Its actually 1hp/level until level 9, so the absolute best possible gained amount from a point of con is 9hp, in most cases its less. non fighters, less then ideal con values, multiclasses etc.It is 1 per fighter level.

It is thus possible to maximise your constitution bonuses by waiting until level 9 to dual, as this is the point that the fighter stops rolling a die at level up and moves onto a fixed 3 HPs per level. You would also then get a constitution bonus at level 10 for your mage level, but that would be at +2 rather than +5.Humanoid_Taifun wrote...

Well, it depends of course on what you want, but dualclassing at level 4 means that in BG2 you will be effectively mostly just a mage with a little extra-cushion of HP.
I dual'd at 3 fighter for crossbow use. The crossbow actually probably saved the day more times than i'd have liked (bolts of lightning are for some reason considered enchanted).
