I couldn't make it to work

Scratch that, I got the original fix to work now! I PM'ed krischel to see if they had any advice, and they poked my brain in the direction it SHOULD have gone all by itself, were it not so mushy from exams. Mea culpa.

So, in light of my system's fantastic borking, what text editor have you been using? It turns out that when I saved my file, a relevant line of code ended up corrupting (as sometimes happens), so that even when I opened it for a quick check in TextEdit and it displayed correctly, it didn't show properly when I checked it with Terminal -- or, even more importantly, work in DAO.

Check your config file using vim (just Google "mac vim" and it'll turn up), rather than something like TextEdit or TextMate. That's how I found out about the mess that it had made of itself. I just deleted the botched code lines, retyped that section, saved, and now it works perfectly.

What I'm showing in TextEdit:

;; App default settings
;; Ereg
[AppDefaults\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\eReg.exe\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\transgaming]
"Disable" = "Y"

[AppDefaults\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\daorigins.exe\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\transgaming]
"cmdlineadd" = "-enabledeveloperconsole"

What Terminal is throwing back:

;; App default settings
;; Ereg
[AppDefaults\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\eReg.exe\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\transgaming]
"Disable" = "Y"

"cmdlineadd" = "-enabledeveloperconsole"

O
ne of the lines is getting eaten somewhere along the way, but I'm uncertain where or how that would be. Any suggestions for resolving the problem?

As mentioned earlier, use vi instead of TextEdit.

I am still having trouble!

I did EVERYTHING that was mentioned about including editing the config file in VIM. When it plug the tail command into terminal I get the correct last few lines of code.

When I go into the game and start up my save... I press the shift+` key and all the keys lock up. I can't do anything, no click, no key commands... even though the game still runs. I have to tab+cmd out to exit.

Any ideas anyone??

The console itself is invisible. So, you won't see it when it opens, and your keystrokes won't activate any menus or options, or cause any character movement/rotation/etc. Until you hit enter, they will continue to do nothing except input data for the console.

When your game 'locks up', try inputting a cheat code and pressing enter. You will be unable to see what you are typing, so make sure that you type very carefully. For a simple trial that shouldn't affect anything in your game like gold, etc., activate the console (using whatever key you have set, mine uses just ' without shift; open up your keybindings.ini file and if it says GRAVE for the console command, don't use shift). Then, type in:

runscript bowlingforferelden

If your console is working properly, your active party member should be surrounded by a large ball of energy, and you will regain control of your characters and menus.

I have tried everything to get the console to work, including using VI in the terminal. Nothing works. I'm running Snow Leopard, would that make a difference? Also, if anybody is feeling charitable, does anybody know how to install some of the downloadable content, like from Dragon Age Nexus? I have the FULL version of the game. I also purchased it for Windows that I run via bootcamp and though it runs "OK", it's not as fast as the Mac version....plus Windows 7 can only access 2 gig of RAM and I have 12 gig installed. I imageine that's the reason why Dragon Age runs much faster on the Mac side.

Hmm, strange. I'm running 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard is required to run DAO on a Mac, actually, so you're not trying to run with an incompatible OS build), on a MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM and a 3.06GHz processor, and the console works fine. (Everything else, now, that's a different story. The system tries to explode if I run anything better than medium quality with high texture.)

Did you check with Terminal to make sure that the config file is in fact written correctly now? You might try downloading Mac Vim as a stand-alone application and trying it that way. That's what I did, and it worked fine. Also, did you modify your keybindings.ini file at all? If you left it untouched, you should need to hit ' (grave accent) to access the console, NOT Shift+' (which would be a tilde; this can lead to confusion, since people call that key the 'tilde key' in reference to the console, and yet you are not actually trying to type the tilde character to access the console - just the grave, if you haven't reset it). Also, remember that the console itself is invisible, though some people (including myself) get a few lines of numbers at letters at the top of the screen.

What sort of mods are you looking to install? If you've got a .dazip file, you can use Modazipin, which can be downloaded from the Utilities section of DANexus. It's like the DAO Mod Manager for Mac. The best mods, however, just involve a file or folder placed in your ~/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/packages/core/override folder (which you're probably going to have to create, unless Modazipin has created it for you). They're the easiest to add and remove.

If you've got something other than a .dazip, PM me and let me know what mod it is and what sort of files it contains. I've installed most types successfully, but some do require modifying actual files used by the game if they're not packaged as a .dazip and they're not a simple override installation (rare, but they're out there).

It worked finally! Thanks! I'm going to download Modazpin now. The other question that I had was about some of the zip files...they contain stuff that you're supposed to put under the override folder. I know where it is but how do you install it. I find some files called my stuff which I don't have on the PC side. I probably didn't mention that I also have the PC version on Windows 7 and everything works great there. It's just slower than the Mac version. Since I have 12 gig, it runs much faster than on Windows 7 which can only access 2 gig.

You are in the PC help forum. There is a Mac forum right below this one. As to your question, DAO and DA2 are two completely separate games. I'm not certain which terminal you are referring to, but if you require technical assistance with the Mac version of DA2, you should go to the DA2 Mac forum and search for the answer there. If a search does not turn up your answer, start your own thread there.
