I will stand by my opinion  of - too much CGI and not enough dungeon-delving and killing action. Otherwise great game. Bioware could have thrown in a few more optional locations with some dungeons though for good measure..maybe there are and I havent found them in my first playthrough but the previous statement is still my opinion so far after my first playthrough.

Game rating - 9.5/10

-A bit too much CGI and not enough actual controlled gameplay otherwise great not counting a few bugs

By CGI I assume you are referring to dialogue and other such events, as there is no CGI in the game (to my knowledge) other then the trailers and opening cutscene (in-game cutscenes are all done using the in-game engine, to my knowledge).

If that's the case, then I'm guessing this is your first BioWare RPG. BioWare RPGs are praised (and sometimes hated) for their lengthy dialogue and story telling. Games like Diablo (I & II) as well as Torchlight are excellent examples of the non-stop action RPG a lot of gamers like.

Bioware need to get back to the gameplay - the OP is on the money. The dialogue contains too much exposition, the NPCs are sometimes too forced and the story swamps some of the less linear aspects of traditional single player fantasy CRPGs.

Don't get me wrong, I liked DA. A lot. But I'm in the less cut-scenes, less exposition, less epic story and more actual gameplay camp.

Technically it's a video game so it's all computer generated. The phrase you are looking for is "scripted events using in-game assets". That's what Dragon Age has.

Anyway, yeah. Lots of talking in Dragon Age. The story is the game's strong point. If there was one thing about Dragon Age I would change, it would be the combat. Too PC gamy for my taste.

This must be your first BioWare game if you're complaining about the dialog and cutscenes. They're very well-established on making games with focus on driving storylines and character interaction. That's really how most RPGs are. The action can be considered as "a necessary component" to further develop the character and the story if it's used correctly.

I probably made no sense in the end, but there you go.

I've been playing Bioware games since MDK and Shattered Steel... they've not always gone down this route. It was probably KotOR that established them as so strongly 'story driven' although the writing in most CRPGs is meh. DA rocks because the lore is good, the setting is strong, it looks great and has fun combat. It's no biggie but I think when the modders get going all these issues will be moot.

not really, you've put the cart before the horse. RPGs, both tabletop and on the 'puter, started out as a mixture of dungeon raiding, tactical wargames with phat loot and monsters. That's the traditional route. The story-driven stuff came later... much later. Somewhere inbetween Diablo and Baldur's Gate lies the true spirit of CRPGs.

The game-as-interactive-novel that Bio specialises in is a relatively new development. I see DA as an attempt to fuse that with the traditional CRPG and it's a good effort.

The first epic story I remember from Bioware is Baldur's Gate. Crpg's, to me, are the equivalent of playing the main character in that awesome book you read last month. Character depth is as important as the battles, imho.

I'm just so glad that there are variety in games. It would be extremely boring if all games were like DA. Which is my best game in a long long time. But there are other cool games with pretty different gameplay style and those are fine too. It would be extremely boring if all games were like those as well!

Yeah I know I am just one person giving his opinion however it's still relevant and something to consider for Bioware because I am not the only person with this view.

I adored the cutscenes in Metal Gear, if you don't like games with alot of dialogue stay away from rpg's like this. I can review MW2 while I hate fps shooters and give it a 7.5 / 10 because I think you have to aim to much.....

I heartily  second this. I love sandbox games and I love story-driven games too. There is room for both and it annoys me to see players put one or the other down.

There are time I'm in the mood to make up my own stories and there are times I'm in the mood to have a story told to me. And I'm glad there are companies that make both.

My own opinion is that Dragon Age is a pretty good mix of action and interaction. :)
