So from what I understand the Reapers whole goal is to "ascend" advance civilizations into Reapers, to stop the conflict that would occur when advance civilizations create synthetic life, as such a conflict has a chance of ending all organic life in the galaxy. So in being a Reaper would preserve all advancements of that civilization into that higher form, and thus allow other organic life to live and evolve without the threat of synthetics ending everything. Thus keeping a balance in the galaxy. 
The whole thing doesn't sound that bad I guess. Unless I'm interpreting it all wrong?
