If anyone finds more eluvians to study, I'd suspect it'll be Finn, not Merrill. He's the one with the Lights of Arlathan and a spell that uses one eluvian to find others... and he's got the Drake's Fall eluvian to cast it on, as well as another shard of the Dalish Origin mirror.

I see no reason why you couldn't go to Arlathan Forest and start prospecting for sunken Arlathan this way.
