I've read a lot of comments that say chain lightening it's worth getting? If so, why not? I'd appreciate a detailed reason instead of something like "damage sucks" as i'm prolly going to delete and redo my mage based on the responses I get. Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen a decent chain lightning since Diablo. Ok, Nox was fine too.
I didn't use it that much really. It casts really slow so you have to be pretty far from your fast running enemies. Otherwise it can hit your party as well. And the damage leaves much to be desired for. AoE spells were a lot better for me.
I took the chain lightning, of course, because I thought it was cool, but I probably used in 2-3 times. It's also weird that it's the 4th tier spell while that thunderstorm (or whatever) is 3rd.

Agree; Chain Lightning is very slow cast and damage doesn't scale with Spellpower like other spells do. There's a mod (for the PC of course) that makes the damage scale but the uploader notes that situations involving high damage and multiple hits seem to break the engine resulting in no damage on subsequent hits. This happened to me (only first target took damage) with the mod so I stopped using it (Lightning Bolt did more damage on main target). Your mileage may vary.
Diablo CL was a blast but the game's sprite limit was a joke, and Blizzard in their ineptitude never fixed it, claiming, like they liked to do then, it would require a significant code rewrite (shoddy programming if so).

The spell wouldn't even be that bad if it weren't for the long casting time.

Ok, thanks, I'll just start over with a better mage that uses fire instead...

Ice was the most useful for me. Ice can freeze enemies in place and blizzard slows their movement. It really helped me in some situations in combination with earthquake.
Fire spells burn the opponents and cause them damage over some time. And lightning spells just do damage. It's too bad that lightning spells are always worse compared to fire and ice. They are supposed to blast away anyone who gets hit and keep them paralyzed for at least a short time. Sure, they are supposed to do a lot more, but this is a game.

If you like seeing your PC fire lightning, use it. You're not competing with any other player in there.

lightning drains mana and stamina as well. But still, no, chain lightning was not worth it.

Personally, I like my chains dark.

I prefer lightning. I've never had chain lightning arc to friendlies. I play on normal, but normal does allow friendly fire, just with reduced damage, so if it happens I should have seen it. This came up previously and someone said that the code for chain lightning searches for the nearest enemy to target when arcing.
The cone fire spell basically sucks. The cone lightning spell is one of my highest single-hit damage yield spells. I believe Tempest does less damage than Inferno, but it's nothing to sneeze at. And you can chain lightning enemies engaging your characters in melee without hurting friendlies, but dropping a fireball on them doesn't work so well.
Really the only benefit of the fire path over lightning that I see is knockdown and burning effects for fireball. Otherwise I think lightning has the edge--especially if it drains stamina on enemies like it does when cast on your party, although since there's no way to directly measure enemy stamina I can't confirm this.

Chainlighting seems bugged if the player uses it.
I noticed that most of the time, it only hit a single enemy and did not bounce. Even if it did bounce, each enemy was only hit one time for 20 damage. But when high level enemies use it against my party, it bounces multiple times so that each member gets hit multiple times. Its quite easily a TPK as one chain lighting ends up doing 50% or more hp damage to non warriors, combined with fireball spam in some of the mage heavy battles...

I have used chain lightning frequently, if I use it on bunched enemies it does 24, 12, 8, and 4 damage, IIRC. I have some damage boosting equipment so I believe the base is something like 20, 10, 5, 1. Here's a screenshot of damage from the first two arcs.
It's a little underpowered for the cast time but still a nice spell for causing moderate damage to a number of enemy targets that can't be hit by AoEs without hitting allies.

But you could just get that exploding spell, I never remember the name, just call it corpse explosion, have everyone focus fire that mob, then he explodes and does damage to all nearby enemies.
Easier spell to get (lower in a tree)
No cast time (or a very small one at least)
Does more damage.
Yeah, I don't like chain lightning, I go up to tempest and stop.

I had the lighting tree maxed out, and didn't even have chain lighting on my quickbar. Either CoC/Shock, or Blizzard/Tempest were enough for most situations.

Chainlightning and walking bomb both do friendly fire damage....

Chain Lightning has no friendly fire. That's just error in description that it says it has one. Same for basic Call Lighting. It's main advantage is casting it when your group is mixed with enemies. Although personally, I would rather focus in Sleep or similar spells that also have no friendly fire.

If you ARE going to use chain lightning I'd recommend casting it on tightly packed groups of enemies (at least five or more) it can do massive damage as it bounces back on people it has previously hit, it also does considerable damage to stamina/mana and can disrupt archer groups, but really it should only be a tier 2 spell.
