I've been thinking that neutral options would be a great step foward in role playing for a voiced protagnist.

What do you think?

There is no right or wrong answer, it all comes down to what you're in the mood for and how you want to Rp that character.

Neutral usually falls under the diplomatic tone

Yeah I think neutral falls under diplomatic as far as DA2 goes.

If the question is which do I prefer... I like sarcastic more. In fact, I've played more sarcastic Hawkes than any other Hawke.

I hated the sarcastic/funny options. Mostly because Hawke would make a weird expression, and say something that was incredibly forced and most of the time it would be rather cringeworthy than funny. Frankly the aggressive options made me smile/laugh more than the "funny" options.

I prefer what ME2 had with the neutral option instead of the funny.

It was very annoying when the non-commital neutral option had to be a stupid joke because it was the sarcastic option.

Neutral is valuable as a "get out" option - something relatively inoffensive that almost every character can take when the other options don't fit. Diplomatic could approach it, but was too often either agreeing with the other, or just plain goody-goody. But it's hard to make a real neutral option at all interesting.

ME1 did a decent job by making it effectively the professional, no nonsense, soldierly option, but unfortunately it mostly lapsed into generic blandness for ME2 and was then scrapped in ME3.

I wholly agree with this post.

I'd be okay with the occasional humorous dialogue option if we actually had a decent amount of choices, but given the limitations of the dialogue wheel, it should not be the third option between diplomatic or aggressive (or paragon and renegade, if you will). Add to that the fact that most of these "sarcastic" options were only "funny" in the same way your average imageboard troll is (as in, not really funny at all).

On that note, I have to say that a lot of the criticism that applies to the sarcastic dialogue option also applied to much of the humor in DA2 in general; it often felt forced and done only for the sake of doing so.

Quite the contrast compared to Origins, which despite its darker tone was more often successful in actually being humorous. That probably being the result of said darker tone, the more sparingly applied jokes also being used to somewhat lighten the mood from time to time and last but not least the more graceful nature of those jokes.

Hey, if they'd ditch the stupid dialogue wheel we could have both! 4 tonal options you say? Heresy you say? You want more choice and not less choice you say? I agree wholeheartedly.

I'd rather neutral. Making a sarcastic personality means there has to be a sarcastic response in all situations which just ends up in some really poor jokes. Oh, Viscount your son died? herpderp at least the day can't get any worse, it's pretty late now TROLOLOLOLOL.

wish they would do away with the tone system all together, but would appear I'm in the minority with that feeling.

I don't think there is a neutral option in dialogue.
Mainly because everything to pick is advance the plot.

Because neutrality isn't very dynamic, and as teh uber hero-dude, you are expected to be dynamic in order to keep the plot moving. Staying home and crying in a corner probably isn't going to save the world. About as close as DA2 gets to "neutral" options are some of the diplomatic responses, and are only neutral in comparison to SarcasticHawke's and AggressiveHawke's inherent jerkiness.

As a Jedi (Browncoat division), it is my duty to channel the Snark. Lewis Carroll is counting on us!

My warden was mostly direct/neutral occasionally funny or a dick, (indimidate). I prefer a neutral response myself with a spice of humor.

Then they would have to have four or more options on the right side of the dialogue wheel instead of three, I don't think they can handle the extra work it would take to change it. haha! I think in Dragon Age the three good/cooperative, snarky/charming, and straight shooter/intimidating worked very well, opposed to in Mass Effect where snark wouldn't have exactly flown well; hence agreeable/paragon(good), non-confrontational (neutral), self-serving (renegade/disagreeable/confrontational (the variations on ME aren't really set that way because as a paragon you can get down right confrontational if somebody does something you don't agree with). It would be nice to have the option to say things a couple of extra ways, but I'm not holding out for it.

They could have more tones but not feel the need to have them all present every time.

I love the funny/sarcastic options. While I can see the value in neutral options available, I tend to ignore them, my characters usually get involved, take sides - or just don't take anyone serious, but what I don't do is staying neutral and removed.

I do miss the neutral dialog options from ME1. Sometimes they were the best voiced, or the most reasonable options to pick. I would like to see them return in future Bioware games. Having no neutral dialog makes dialog options feel a bit too polarized. I liked the option of asking neutral questions to learn more, or get a better understanding of the context, before making a moral choice.

My biggest problem with the DA2 dialogue system.

I think the dialogue would lose some flavour if the neutral option completely replaced the snarky one,but I do think the snark option was tad over used in DA2.Not only did the humour option feel a bit forced at times, but often you'd simply want a more neutral option (like when Anders wants you to do a favour in return for the GW map,and the only alternative to agreeing blindly,is to make a crack about working with animals and children).

That was funny!

Sarcastic Hawke cracks me up!

Granted, telling Emeric that we would see boneless women walking around was a tad much...
