Greetings, I'm a new Baldur's Gate player with a question regarding BG2: Shadows of Amn.  I'm running a paladin Player Character, and I'm wondering how to change his spell list.  (It started me with about 10 detect evils, and I'd rather have some more healing spells.)  Thing is, the character's priest scroll is empty, the spell icon is browned out, and all spells he can use are under the special abiliities tab.  Is there something I need to do to before I can change his loadout?  I played a few hours with a fighter PC before this, and noticed Anomen's spells could be changed from his scroll.  Am I just missing something obvious?  I'm still in Irenicus' dungeon, if that matters.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, you are not a paladin but one of the special kits... Inquisitor would be my 1st guess?

Not every paladin kit is actually capable of casting cleric spells. What you selected was the Inquisitor, right?

Those only get some innate spells, notably Dispel Magic and True Sight (you will need Detect Evil exactly once during the entire game), but other than that, they are not allowed to do any casting.
More information on this should be available to you if you press the button named [Kit Description] on the character record screen.

No, I checked and the kit description says paladin.

His spell loadout is:

Cure Light Wounds: 2
Slow Poison: 2
Draw Upon Holy Might: 2
Lay On Hands: 1
Detect Evil: 10 (!)
Protection From Evil: 7

And like I said above, all of these are under the special abilities tab, not the spell list. Is there a level or reputation requirement needed for a paladin? Because I just started with this character, still in the starting dungeon, even, so I'm level 7 with 12 reputation (average). I thought as long as your character alignment was lawful good, the paladin could use his spells. Heck, you have to be LG to even pick paladin on the character screen!

I'm hoping it's not a glitch. Thanks for the replies so far!

Those are not paladin specific.

I'm level 7

Here we've got the issue. Paladins get their first spell at level 9.

Ahh, wonderful. I guess part of being a paladin is learning patience, eh? And learning humility the hard way in front of a forum, lol. Anyway, I appreciate the quick response. Thanks a lot!

yeah rangers get magic level 7 (or 8 maybe). Paladins get them later.

Annoying, yes.

The Cleric spells Cure Light Wounds, Slow Poison and Draw Upon Holy Might are the protagonist's "Bhaal Powers", they are innate abilities not memorized spells.
Ditto: Lay On Hands, Detect Evil and Protection From Evil are class abilities.
