I was SOOOOO preparing to come a-raging into this thread till I saw the first post. :P

Also this reminds me of Skyrim where you could pick <stay silent> with EVERY option in the Dark Brotherhood. Huh. Funnily enough that resulted in some of the best dialogue in that fricking game.

It may sound good on paper but I doubt it would work well in most conversations. The protagonist may not need new lines, but every other NPC would need additional lines in response, as having someone staring blankly at you in the middle of conversation isn't exactly normal.

It could be a funny throwback to older games if you could go through the whole game without saying a word and delivering all necessary communication by body language/pantomime.

I prefer voiced, but I don't hate silent.  While it's nice to know exactly what I'm going to say, it is really odd watching the warden with that blank stare all the time. Of course Hawke has odd expressions, but at least they have them.

Isn't the mute button on your tv a better answer ?

No. Read previous posts for why. Short version: it wouldn't fix the issues some gamers have with voiced protagonists.

I think that would be an interesting and useful option to have. I'm usually all for having more dialogue options anyhow, and there have certainly been times that I've wished there was something to the effect of 'remain silent'.

It does not, however, in any way help my (or, I expect, most people's) issues with the voice. That's an entirely different kind of silent. Silent as in 'the character actually, in game and to the NPCs, never says anything' is very different from silent as in 'the character is not voiced, but in game does speak to the NPCs'.

Plus, you could have interactions where if you persistantly refuse to verbally communicate or explain yourself the principle gets progressively weirded out.  Those would be fun, especially if they involve you busting down somebody's door and smacking them around.

I love this idea.

Once in a while maybe, as pointed out by the Oghren/Felsi encounter, where you get an option to stay out of the conversation or interject something. I wouldn't want it to be overused. Maybe once or twice in a game would be enough for me. While staying silent could be an option to learn more, unless you ask questions of the NPC, you won't learn what you want to learn from them, usually. While holding your tongue to allow the other party enough rope to hang themselvdes may work that way in real life, it's seldom implemented well in a video game which relies heavily on dialogue.

The Walking Dead has a neat option in many conversations where you don't have to say anything at all. Sometimes there just isn't anything to say, or you're better off keeping your mouth shut. Works really well in that game, especially in the recently released episode. This is another reason I would like Bioware to include a timer during dialogue.

No freaking timer. I just started playing The Walking Dead the other day and I'm liking it so far. But that bloody timer annoys me. Was playing with a friend of mine, and we roleplayed this character together. All of a sudden there would be an important choice and we didn't have time to think our character through and something random happened.

And the above is hardly something that happened solely because we were playing together, it's definitely something that happens when playing on your own as well. I've went afk to think in both ME1 and ME2, for instance, mid-conversation. That's my decision of how I want to play the game, I'd rather still have the option.

Though yes, the silent option is a great addition.

That's the idea :)

The timer only shows up during situations when you have to make a quick decision. I find that makes it more interesting and believeable. Sometimes when we're force to make snap decisions we don't always pick the best one.

It only sucks when I accidentally move my mouse onto my other screen and click and it minimizes my game.

Sorry for going off topic here.

To be fair, regarding the "muting the TV won't fix the issues with a voiced protagonist", having the PC not talk at all doesn't exactly equate talking with a non-voiced PC, ala DA:O.

I think a stay silent option is an excellent idea.

That does not make a silent protagonist however; a silent protagonist is one where you still choose dialogue options, you just don't get to hear your protagonist say them in game.

Firstly, DON'T GO CRAZY.  This isn't the umpteen billionth thread whining about how a silent protagonist is ZOMG SO MUCH BETTER etc.

No, what I'm proposing is this: what if in DA3 there were a 4th "tone" option, which was: "stay silent".  (Maybe with some animated facial expressions/motions.)

Now, would that be interesting?  I think it'd have some serious benefits.  Firstly, it'd let the devs throw in an extra option without having to do a lot of voice work for the protagonist.  It'd give options when people REALLY HATE all the lines.  And the people who REALLY WANT a silent protagonist . . . could have one.

Just a thought, anyway.

You think people want to roleplay a mute character, with no opinion on anything? Is that seriously what you have been thinking every time you've seen a "Silent protagonists ftw" thread?

****ING LOL

But a silent option is good for other reasons, such as the neutral option i've been pining for since DA2. If you don't openly berate someone or give them a home to live in, you have to make fun of their hairstyle. ****ing ridiculous, but i think this option would do nicely.

Don't worry, I hate them as well. I only handle them in Bethesda games, but not in cinematics games like Dragon Age 2. Even Dragon Age Origins felt awkward for me.

I don't think having a silent option on every dialogue would work very well.

Having the "neutral" option being taciturn and laconic, often using single words or just body language, could maybe work quite well though.

I don't think the OP's suggesting that our character could be silent throughout every conversation in the whole game.

... even in DAII you couldn't *always* choose to be diplomatic.

I think it's been established that it's not really a solution for the people who want "silent" protagonist. (which is to say, not really silent at all, but with an imagined voice of one's own making)

But it would let people have a literally silent protagonist, which could be interesting in some situations. Or all situations.

It will be in Orlais. So there will be a fourth personality type: Mime.

So, this isn't so much about having a silent protagonist but rather having a "Silent Bob" protagonist?

I would be hesitant to use this option... mostly because I'd be afraid of what facial animation they would tack on it at any given time.

Stay silent <gives a cold, stony stare>
Stay silent <look cowed and intimidated>
Stay silent <make a funny, 'I am so baffled by what you said I am going to look at you sideways and not say any' look>
Stay silent <try and contain a chuckle>
Stay silent <look confused and have no idea what is going on>
Stay silent <like you are waiting for someone else to cut the tension>
Stay silent <just walk away>
Stay silent <look completely taken aback and shocked at what was just done/said>
Stay silent <look like I have a secret that I can barely contain>

There are dozens of different ways that 'stay silent' as an option could have tons of other implications. At least with the paraphrase we usually have some clue of what Hawke was doing. Being silent can take so many different forms that, without the words to clarify why, we could be open to vast misinterpretations of the option when we choose it.

The only time I would choose a 'stay silent' option is with a silent PC, since I know they would not show facial animations more often than not, and would let me role play why and how my character was staying silent.
