 i7 2600k
8GB 1600mhz DDR3
128GB Crucial C300 SSD
2x5870 1GB Crossfire
2560*1440 0xAA DX11, Very High, (avg 55-60FPS)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Dragon Age 2 1.04
Have All Major DLC

Crashes happen with 12.8 Catalyst Drivers and 12.6
Tried Installing via Steam and installing via Origin crashes happen on both.

Game randomly crashes during dialogue, Game randomly crashes during menus,Game randomly crashes to a black screen. Ctrl+Alt+Delete, ALT+F4, ESC all have no effect. Have to hit reset button on computer case.

Worked fine when played a year ago on same system & settings. Only Difference is Patched version+Mark of the Assassin DLC+Driver version.

I would suggest backing down still farther back than 12.6 on drivers.

Interesting. This EXACT same thing happens to me. Decided to pick up DA:2 again and started a new game, and during the first long dialogue between Aveline, Wesley and the group, this happened TWICE. I think it's quite likely that this is an issue with the new drivers, as I am running 12.6 and never had problems with drivers that are about a year older.

My specs:
i7 920 @ 4 GHz
Crossfire 5870s (Sapphire OC version)
6 GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 MHz

Windows 7 Professional
DA2 with all DLC and patches (Steam version)
Game running @ max settings on everything (only get big lag on zoomed in scenes with massive particle effects)

Hmm.. OP, looks like we have very similar systems. I have a strong feeling that Crossfire is causing the issue, so I'm gonna try again with it disabled.

Since the 12-2 and 12-3 Catalytic Control Center and Drivers, AMD's GPU drivers have been conflicting with various games. I don't think I'd seen mention of trouble with DA2 until now, however.

It's always been a problem with Crossfire. Crossfire is such a sad excuse for trying to get more performance out of a graphics card. You don't even get 100% of the second card, and more often than not, there are issues with high end games. It's not dissimilar to how little gain you get going from dual to quad core. Unless the application is specifically optimized for multiple cores (and this is almost no games), it's just not worth it.

EDIT: Anyways, the crashes seemed to stop with Crossfire off. I'm gonna turn Crossfire back on, and lower all graphics settings to the lowest possible and see what happens.

EDIT2: Man, this is super lame. I turned EVERYTHING except resolution to the lowest possible setting, and I barely notice a difference in visual quality. I'm sure that there will be a much bigger difference with particle effects, but the rest of the game looks really great regardless. Graphics settings are so overrated..

You need crossfire for 2560x1440+ though to max newer games like Batman AC, BF3, etc in-game settings and add SSAO and maintain over 60fps.I originally believed AA wasn't needed at 1440p until I saw how AA affects shadow darkness and lighting.

For 1920x1080 or less I agree, Crossfire/SLI is a waste. You should just put your money towards the top/2nd from the top tier. two cheaper card will only give you issues. I noticed with ATI they have major problems with negative scaling, when new games are released. Which is why I will be getting a GTX 780 in Q1 2013.

Anyways I fixed the crashes:
Check Disable Multiple Render targets and Disable Aspect Ratio Correction and change the graphics settings from very high to high. I get 100+fps @ 2560x1440 and the change from High to Very High isn't noticeable enough to matter.

I know longer get crashes with 12.8 using these setting with DX11 enabled and Texture Pack used.

Cool.

I run a single monitor setup and have no plans to change that, so I ended up buying a Gigabyte 7970 last night, which should hopefully future proof me forever (or the next 5 years.. whichever comes first). I completely agree that Crossfire is a waste for any single monitor setup.
