I get it now. But, honestly, did you expect to have a choice in every conversation Shepard was involved? I played ME3 and I don't think my Shepard acted without my direction. Quite the contrary, in fact.

In writing terms yes, not going with the traditional topic of "epic final boss with chorus" is not the easy way out. When you write a story, you can always take the easy path and use the topics that all readers will recognize to move your story foward.
But trying to do something original? That's not easy.
