 I picked this skill so my blood mage would have someone/thing to blood sacrifice from, but it doesnt seem like a good pet.  Granted I just got out of Lothering but what can you do to make them more survivable?

Definitely get Spell Might. You'll get much more usefulness out of your Animated Dead if you use that before you raise them.
