total noob here,
I down loaded the tool set and am playing around with some of the sets i.e. Highever castle
3 axis movement won't work. I can only zoom in and out.
what do I need (software wise) to move the "sets" around so I can see them in 3d.

Is this any help?

No, hang on, I misunderstood the question.
(I think, from memory) hold LMB to slide, RMB to rotate?

3DS Max is a 3D modelling program. You can choose a style of camera to replicate the controls found in Max, seeing as it's the most common modelling app used in the industry and many developers are already familiar with it.
The axis movement and rotation icons are only for manipulating objects. Select something first. If you are in the area editor and have manually loaded up a level layout in a new area, there will be nothing to select. If you have opened one of the single player areas, there should be creatures/NPCs and placeables (doors, chests, etc.) that you can select.

I'm guessing you're looking at the Single Player module? Try right-clicking the area in the Palette Window (upper right), and select "Check Out". You won't be able to move anything without checking out the resource first.
For just looking around, I usually use CTRL+LMB to drag the view around, and middle mouse button to rotate. Hope that helps!

is there a "Modding for dummies" book? ah well. maybe I should take some classes. The ones on-line are fine but I think I need a more hands on approach, since trying to figure out how to do this on my own gives me the same effect as drinking a Pan-Galactic Garble Blaster.
