DoomGuy is a literal vehicle for the player to inset themselves into. His lack of a real name is proof of this.

Master Chief at least has a name and backstory, it's only in-game that he doesn't emote.

Back then, games didn't need a story, it just needed a bunch of blood and chainsaws. Master Chief is also a literal vehicle, his backstory is there just so he doesn't feel empty.

Seeing how he has something resembling a personality, I doubt it.
