Though if they're removing the rivalry system, the odds that I'd romance her seem low.

I partially rescind this statement with the criteria that they develop her character a lot better than they have so far and how they do it.ReggarBlane wrote...
Showing any developer preference towards a romance with that annoying interrogator would nix my approval of her inclusion altogether. Otherwise, to each their own and she can join if they don't make it seem like all other romances were player-fodder.
The occasions we've seen/read of her leave much to be desired in the definition of her character so far. There is the possibility that we haven't seen all there is and that it might (just might) make her appealing.

Hopefully future Dragon Age protagonists will be (to be honest) good enough for her.

Eh, Merrill fills all those well enough. Cassandra'd be close enough, but Merrill is better.General User wrote...
Cassandra was drop-dead gorgeous woman who was mentally and emotionally stable, had a good head on her shoulders, and a clear sense of right and wrong. She wouldn't exactly have been Hawke's type.

Like the great bard, the artist formerly known as "The-Artist-Formerly-Known-As-Prince" once said: "Women not girls rule my world."Xilizhra wrote...

Infantile? I think not. "Cute," perhaps, but not in a developmentally deficient way.MisterJB wrote...
I think User is referring to her general attitude. In my opinion, Merril just acts in a very infatile manner which makes her really cute but more in the sense of how puppies are really cute.

"Is the coast really wounded? How did that happen? Can't it be healed?"
Lines such as that make me think of her as adorable rather than attractive.

To each one's own. However, I see no reason to just let developmentally based slams pass without comment.MisterJB wrote...
I wouldn't call her deficient, more "naive".

I thought Merrill was a great character; smart, sarcastic, and proactive.
I'm not sure I see the appeal of Cassandra because I find the Chantry repellant and oppose the Order of Templars. I don't see Cassandra working with a pro-mage protagonist who is looking to topple the institutions that she serves.

Fenris did, and was even romanceable in that. In any case, I have a weird attraction to religiously zealous female combatants, including Meredith in a sense. Although I have my doubts that I'll actually romance Cassandra; it'll depend on whom the other choice is, I suppose.LobselVith8 wrote...

Though why have both her and Cullen as party members?

You realize Merrill is often sarcastic, right?
Ilen: Ah, Merrill … you've returned. How has your time been amongst the shemlen?
Merrill: It's been nothing but roses and rainbows, Master Ilen. The Alienage is lovely in the spring. The collapsing shacks and drunken brutes are nicely offset by the knee-deep mud.
In other words, she isn't being serious.

Merrill tends to be sarcastic a lot, which I think goes over some peoples' heads because of the accent of the VA. For instance:
Anders: Do the Dalish ever have fancy parties? I always imagined they celebrated most big occasions by eating mushrooms and acorns. And maybe dancing naked around a campfire.
Merrill: You know, I was wondering when the naked dancing was going to start. And the human sacrifice. I mean, you just can't throw a decent party without kidnapping a human child and offering her entrails to the sky gods.
Anders: Really?
Merrill: No.

Only because, considering the context of Hawke walking up perfectly calmly and talking to the guard a bit, suddenly frantically claiming there was a fire was an extremely bizarre thing to do; humorous Hawke has always been a bit loopy, and the guard must have been fantastically dumb to buy the story.MisterJB wrote...
She is serious many times. For instance, when Hawke tried to distract some guards with claims of a fire, she actually tought the fire was real.

Merrill is serious at times, such as the religious debates she engages in. The conversation between Anders and Merrill makes it clear that the distinction is Andrastian (religious), which is why Merrill doesn't share Anders view, and she seriously addresses her views:
Anders: Maybe you don't really understand the difference between spirits and demons.
Merrill: Did I ask you?
Anders: Spirits were the first children of the Maker, but He turned his back on them to dote on His mortal creations.
Anders: The ones who resented this became demons, driven to take everything mortals had and gain back the Maker's favor.
Merrill: Your "Maker" is a story you humans use to explain the world.
Merrill: We have our own stories. I don't need to borrow yours.
Completely serious, and able to hold her own.
