I really would like to get into J-RPG's but I just lose interest. The only turn based combat I liked was in Pokemon, I prefer Western RPG's.

Also, the level of customization of the costumes is greater than i thought it would be.

So what if a game has a few costumes really - though a whole bunch of them break my immersion and forcibly disconnect me from the main character and the narrative - but ok, so what if there's an alternate costume or two?

Why does it bother me?

Well, because Square Enix has a proven record of putting aesthetics (as always) and microtransactions (as of late) forward before the rest of their games. Before story and certainly before depth.
I mean it ain't exactly new news, but it's not like all these interviews are going on about how much time is being spent on the game because they're trying to make it the best it possibly can be, right?

80 costumes is a goddamned lot. I can pretty comfortably say that the guys sitting in the Lightning Returns dev room d!cking around with putting cat girl ears on their serious action heroine and talking about how her cup size went up aren't putting in the same kind of work towards making the game a credit to its genre like the folks working on the Last Guardian, or Dark Souls II are. Not all - but many of the talent pools in Square Enix are just very shallow indeed. And from their combined thimbleful of craft emerges these damn superficial games.

Nothing I've seen of Lightning Returns is really telling me to expect otherwise.

To be honest, they haven't shown much by way of the game's story except basic plot elements, but I've maintained that this is probably because they don't want to give away too much.

Now everyone in this thread probably knows of my rampant XIII fanaboy-f@ggotry, but I will admit that from the trailers I can't honestly expect this to be as good as the previous two. From the new "sexy warrior woman" thing they're doing with Lightning's outfits and poses to the sorta "Lightning is holier than thou" perspective they're putting forth with the marketing, it feels like they're catering to a different group with this one.

Hopefully I'm wrong though, because I was skeptical about XIII-2 and ended up loving it.

Also, there are over 100 costumes Geth....they really went all out...

I believe the outfits change what powers you have so it kinda makes sense. For a JRPG at least (unless i am rembering incorrectly)

And to be fair, Lightning was voted the most popular FF female in some Japanese poll. Can't really blame SE for trying to capitalize. But they've always had a bit of a problem understanding the virtues of moderation...

Final Fantasy is among the only games around that actually make me regret never touching a Xbox360 or PS3.
I've played all the others on an emulator. Oh well, let's hope it's gonna kick ass anyway

But in all seriousness, the new trailer for FFXIII looks, well... nice. Sure, the whole changing outfits brings not so fond memories of FF X-2, but still... I'm intrigued.
