I don't know about that. Maybe in the sense that you have full movement but if anything FFXV is looking to have a much more KH based combat system than this. It even has the same composer.

I watched that.
Love the young woman's voice that does Lightning.
Toriyama and Kitase should be ashamed.
They come close to ruining the franchise .
This game might be the only FFXIII game worth buying .
Loved Lightning black outfit.
Made her the attractive young woman she should always have been.

New artwork from Famitsu confirms Caius and Yuel, as well as showing Vanille and even Serah (which is pretty mysterious). The image is a bit small, but you can clearly make out Caius, Yuel, Vanille, and Serah, as well as the previously confirmed cast.

I'm thinking about getting one of the versions of 13, but I've never played Final Fantasy before. How would you guys describe the gameplay? Is the type of series that would be easy for a newcomer to just pick up and play or is it more catered to long time fans?

Well it differs between the first and second game. Both use an ATB combat system where you select commands to create attack chains that your character performs. Each character also has six roles, which you mix and match to create paradigms. For example, three "commandos" is a fully physical attack based paradigm; two "medics" and a "ravager" would allow for two characters to heal while one casts offensive spells. In both you only control one character at a time while the others are played by (very intelligent) AI. The difference being hat in the first game, if your player character dies, you lose the fight, whereas in XIII-2 death of the PC switches you to the other character in your party (similar to KoTOR).
As far as exploration, the first game is almost completely linear for a large portion, focusing completely on story and character development but later opening up into a reasonably vast wilderness plain on Gran Pulse. XIII-2 offers much more freedom by allowig you to travel from world to world at will after a relatively brief opening (and once you have the world you want to travel to unlocked).

As far as the gameplay, though, FF XIII does an excellent job of detailing how combat works, if you actually take the time to read everything on it and experiment within the game.
People complain that the combat is simplistic but it's really quite powerful if you know what you're doing. But no, very low entry bar.

I might give it a shot then. The price seems pretty reasonable. I've never played a game like it, so it should be a learning experience, at least.

Game like what? Turn based? JRPG? Story-heavy?

I guess the simpilest way to voice my main concern is this: is it hard to get into a turn based RPG if you've never played one before.
...is it like Pokemon?

Funnily enough, the friend of mine who I bugged to get the game (I mentioned it in Slott's avatar thread) complained that the combat was like Pokemon when he returned it. So in the very very broadest sense you might say so, though I've never played Pokemon so I wouldn't know.
But if you plan on getting XIII first (and you should, it's really best to start at the beginning) the game outlines fairly clearly how to play. You shouldn't have any problem at all. FF XIII was my first turn-based RPG (outside of the Bioware games) and I enjoyed the combat and did fairly well, though I had abominable trouble with a certain type of enemy (the game kind of intends that, though).

Nothing really new here since they showed this off a while ago, but some new looks at the Yuna costume:
