How about this: There's a Fade sequence where you are able to temporarily have a Griffin under your command or you at least see a Griffin and agree to either help it or kill it.
Griffins?!?!?!?!?!

How about you're walking about somewhere and you see something that looks like a large eagle but it turns out to be a Griffin, not just any Griffin but the very last one! it joins your party, you do some adventure and it dies in the end.

No but it's a common plot line, can't expect them to come up with an original story now they've got their fan base and DGs not on the case, he wasn't in the writing team for DAA.

"The Dragon Age get's it's name from the reappearance of Dragons, formerly thought to be extinct, at the end of the last age"
After the Dragon Age saga ends... "Griffin Age: F*ck Dragons"

Why do you all say "Griffins"? In Thedas they're called "Griffons".

Nah. A legacy character is a huge draw in a lot of BioWare titles. Baldur's Gate series had it, over two games and two expansions. Mass Effect has it and now, with Awakening, it seems BioWare are perfectly fine with repeating that strategy.
Griffons are in the lore for the same reasons anything else is. To flesh out the world. Will we be riding them as mounts in Dragon Age : Conclusions? Maybe. I'd expect them to be more akin to the Heavenly Gate Guardian in Jade Empire, a special power.
Dragon Age is not an overworld game. There's no need for mounts because, similar to Fable, the environments are corridors of content split by load screens and map travel. This isn't World of Warcraft. You dont literally walk from Orzammar to Redcliff. You transition during loading.
Seeing as the main quest line of Origins was mainly about the resurgence of the Darkspawn and the fall (or diminishing) of the Grey Wardens, and Awakening was about them reclaiming lost ground. I fully expect the culmination of the entire Dragon Age saga to be some kind of Minas Tirith-esque 'hooray last minute Griffon cavalry to save the day'.
I mean, it's basically a genre trope at this point. Who doesn't expect some climactic battle atop Minrathous with dragons and griffons and all sorts of craziness.
