"Sovereign has.. upgraded me. The relationship is symbiotic. Organic and machine intertwined. A union of flesh and steel. I am a vision of the future shepard"
In the words of Tenacious D, That's F*ckin' Synthesis!
That was not sarens idea. His idea was that if he makes himself usefull then the reapers will let him live. But after virmire he doubts his goals, so sovereign implants him(like the illusive man) to control him completely.
It was never his wish/idea to get implanted by sovereign.
And I am sorry that I got off-topic with this discussion.

Once I found out Saren is in fact Sovereign in disguise, my goal was to stop him, and his friends.
Nothing changed my goal in ME2.
In ME3 I wanted to feel as if I was actually fullfulling that goal, but it was hard with all the cerberus, krogan, geth, turian and quarian problems. I was hit in the face with the "uniting the galaxy is your goal, duh", and thus I never felt as though I was doing what I wanted to do.
I never wanted to unite the species. I wanted the Reapers gone, even if it meant destroyng 90% of the galaxy.
But nooo...

Yes, living in peace is, of course, the main goal, but the chances of the cycle continuing if the reapers are left alive is too great, so sorry, gotta go.

I never specifically wanted to wipe out the Reapers, but I didn't consider an alternative was possible. It didn't seem viable until ME3.

to shoot Udina- complete
be with Tali and get her Rannoch- complete

Destroying the Reapers was the obvious path to that, but the second I found out the Control path would harm fewer people I switched to that instead. The Reapers had to be stopped. They didn't have to die; not if it hurt others.

To shoot bad guys with high velocity rounds. Shep made this clear in ME1Taddl wrote...
I ask this because I frequently read something like:
"Destroy is the only viable end because it was the main goal to destroy the Reapers from the start."
But for me the main goal of the series was never to destroy the Reapers, but to save the galaxy and my loved ones.
Am I alone with this?
When I say goal I of course mean the goal of your/my shepard.

My Shepard wanted to save her homeplanet Earth and stop the Reapers. She didn't know if it was possible to destroy them. But she didn't see any other option until the last moment. And at the same time she wanted to understand the Reapers and discover secrets of the deep space.

Control saves everyone and allows Shepard, through his sacrifice, to fulfill that purpose indirectly on a perpetual basis. Seemed an intrinsically appropriate ending to me actually (for a paragon anyway).
